 Draft Scout Rodney Landers News
03/31/09 - While James Madison began the competition for his replacement that afternoon, Rodney Landers also spent Tuesday looking for a new job - in pro football. Landers was one of six Dukes from last year's FCS semifinal team to work out for NFL scouts at the school's second pro day. Scouts from the Eagles, Colts, and Patriots were on hand. Landers skipped JMU's original pro day on March 18, because he was still recovering from the ankle injury he suffered in the Dukes' loss to Montana in the FCS Semifinals. Saying he's now 100 percent healthy, Landers participated in every test except the 40-yard dash. His results included a 36" vertical jump, 12 reps on the 225-pound bench press, and 4.17 seconds in the shuttle run. Landers, who expects to switch positions at the next level, also did position drills at defensive back, running back, and wide receiver. "It was kind of tough, to go out there and do some (defensive back) drills. Go out there and do some running back drills, work on catching the ball," he said after Tuesday's workout. "It's just a different feel for me, and I embrace the challenge." - Damon Dillman, WHSV TV
03/30/09 - Rodney Landers had to watch his former James Madison teammates as they worked out for pro scouts earlier this month. On Tuesday, Landers will get a chance to show what he can do. JMU strength coach Jim Durning said Monday that Landers is scheduled to work out at the school's second pro day, Tuesday morning at Bridgeforth Stadium. Landers skipped the Dukes' first pro day on March 18, because he's still recovering from the ankle injury he suffered in JMU's FCS semifinal loss to Montana. Durning said Landers won't run the 40-yard dash or shuttle run on Tuesday. As a senior, Landers won the Dudley Award, given annually to the best Division I football player in Virginia, and finished second in the voting for the Payton Award, which goes to the best player at the FCS level. The Dukes' quarterback, he threw for 1,534 yards and 21 touchdowns, and ran for 1,770 yards and 16 touchdowns. Durning said JMU scheduled the second pro day for Tuesday in part to give Landers the opportunity to audition for NFL scouts. - Damon Dillman, WHSV TV, Harrisonburg
02/23/09 - The last time James Madison fans saw Rodney Landers, he was standing hobbled on the sideline with an ankle injury as the Dukes lost to Montana in the FCS Semifinals. "I'm slowly getting back into the flow of things," says Landers, who admits he's still not back to 100 percent. "And I'm excited about my opportunity to pursue the next level." Landers is one of a handful of former Dukes getting ready for that opportunity, by working out four times a week with strength and conditioning coach Jim Durning. "Just the intensity level, I think, is through the roof right now," Landers says of the workouts, which consist of weightlifting in the morning, and running in the afternoon. "That one day" is March 18th, when NFL scouts will visit campus for JMU's annual Pro Day. "They've been able to watch some of our film, and they've been to some of our games," says Landers. "But in a sense, I mean, this is the interview. This is the tryout. And for a lot of teams, it's the first time they get to see you in person." "It's basically a do-or-die situation," Haywood says. "Just coming out and performing to the best of your ability." For Landers, there's the added pressure of a position switch. A quarterback in college, he says NFL teams have talked to him about playing running back, receiver -- even safety, on defense. "On that level, there are so many great players out there, you can't really be choosy," he says. "And if I'm blessed to get the opportunity to play, then I'll take full advantage of it." - Damon Dillman, WHSV TV

The Richmond-Northern Iowa game will be shown on ESPN. Landers (Virginia Beach, Va.) in JMU’s 38-35 NCAA playoff win over Wofford Nov. 29 became the fifth FCS player to compile career totals of 3,000 passing yards (reached during the Wofford game) and 3,000 rushing yards (reached during the Towson game Nov. 22).
