 Draft Scout *Andrew Means News
04/14/09 - The Browns, in desperate need of a receiver, will host Avon Lake’s Andrew Means for a workout today. Agent Jeff Chilcoat said his client was scheduled to report to Browns headquarters this morning. Means, who played wideout at Indiana University, is expected to be a middle-round pick in the NFL Draft on April 25-26. Means (6-foot-1 5/8, 214 pounds) played baseball and football for the Hoosiers and was an 11th-round draft pick of the Cincinnati Reds in June. He played center field for the short-season Class A team in Montana, then returned to Indiana for his final season of football, catching 34 passes. Means reported to Reds spring training in Florida after the NFL’s scouting combine, but recently requested that they let him leave so he could focus on preparing for an NFL career. The Reds said he could leave, but retain his rights. Means returned home to Avon Lake to work out. “The Reds absolutely desire him to come back, when he’s done playing football,” Chilcoat said Monday. “Hopefully that’s in 15 years.” - Scott Petrak, The Chronicle-Telegram
03/20/09 - Indiana Pro day: Ten teams representatives showed up to watch 12 players work out indoors on FieldTurf at Indiana’s pro day on March 10. The following were the notable prospects: WR Andrew Means (6-foot 5/8, 213 pounds) got some attention with a blazing 4.36 in the 40, an impressive 6.89 in the three-cone drill and 18 bench press reps. He is currently in the Reds’ baseball training camp. - Gil Brandt, NFL.com
02/26/09 - Means’ pro day workout for NFL scouts — he’s aiming for the 4.3s in the 40 — is scheduled for March 10 in Bloomington. In the interim, he will work out with trainers in Cincinnati to prepare. Then he’ll immediately face his first big decision on the way to the largest decision. He’s scheduled to arrive at the Reds’ spring training March 11 in Sarasota, Fla. “As of right now, I plan on reporting,” he said. What if it changes the way NFL teams view him? “All teams know football is my love and that’s what I want to do,” Means said. “At the same time, I still have baseball there. “If I don’t go to spring training, I could be stuck in a hole and have nothing to do.” Means said he was projected as a third- to fifth-round pick in the baseball draft, but his intention to play another year of football at Indiana made teams weary, including the Indians. “They had their chance,” he said. So did the Reds. “I gave them the chance to get me 100 percent committed to Major League Baseball,” he said of contract talks. “They didn’t come through.” - Scott Petrak, The Chronicle-Telegram
02/11/09 - PRO POTENTIAL: WR Andrew Means was the Hoosiers' second-leading receiver last season, and he averaged 13.2 yards a catch. He scored just one touchdown over the last two years, and his numbers took a dip last season. Means has a big body -- he's 215 pounds -- but still has good speed and is a good blocker. He's also a good athlete and is in minor-league baseball player for the Cincinnati Reds. Means is going to the NFL Scouting Combine in late February, and he has a shot to be a late-round pick if he puts up impressive numbers in Indianapolis.
01/29/09 - Former Indiana wide receiver/outfielder and current Cincinnati Reds prospect Andrew Means has been invited to the NFL combine. The Combine will be held Feb. 20-26 in Indy. Players run, jump, lift weights and take tests while pro scouts swarm. - Herald Times Online
