Draft Scout Brandon Weeden News
11/19/15 - QB Brandon Weeden was released by the Cowboys and claimed off waivers by the Houston Texans. Weeden was released because of the return of Romo and because he was surpassed as the backup by Matt Cassel.
Weeden, 32, was with the Cowboys since 2014, serving as Romo's primary backup. But he went 0-4 in games he started when Romo was injured.
Weeden lost his lone start against Arizona last season, and then went 0-3 in his stretch filling in for Romo this season. Weeden has not won a game in which he started since his rookie season in 2012, with the Cleveland Browns.
LB Sean Lee returned to practice for the first time since leaving the Week 9 game against Philadelphia with his second concussion in five weeks.
11/18/15 - QB Brandon Weeden was placed on waivers by the Cowboys Tuesday (Nov. 17).
10/14/15 - QB Brandon Weeden is not happy about his demotion in favor Matt Cassel. "How do you think I took it? Obviously I'm pissed," Weeden said. "But, you know, nature of this business." Weeden declined to go into specifics about his meeting with coach Jason Garrett, but said the coaching staff is well aware of his feelings about the decision.
Weeden also wouldn't comment on whether he is a victim of the Cowboys making a change for change's sake, or if he felt like a scapegoat for the team's three-game losing skid.
10/13/15 - The Dallas Cowboys are turning to Matt Cassel as their quarterback, according to multiple reports on Tuesday.
Brandon Weeden was told that the Cowboys are going to start Cassel against the New York Giants on Oct. 25 after their bye week. Cassell was acquired in late September from the Buffalo Bills in a trade.
The Cowboys (2-3) apparently decided to make the change after their loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday. Weeden started three games after Tony Romo went down with a broken collarbone and lost all three, completing 64 of 91 passes for 666 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
Against the Patriots, Weeden passed for a season-low 188 yards and completed 26 of 39 passes with one interception.
In Weeden's last 11 starts as an NFL quarterback, his record is 0-11.
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said earlier that the team would evaluate the quarterbacks and how to proceed going forward until Romo returns. The broken collarbone will keep Romo out of the lineup until Nov. 22 at the earliest.
Cassel lost a quarterback competition in Buffalo during the preseason with Tyrod Taylor for the starting job.
10/12/15 - QB Brandon Weeden's job as interim quarterback may be in jeopardy as the team re-evaluates its situation while awaiting the return of Tony Romo, which is expected to be Nov. 22.
Recently acquired journeyman quarterback Matt Cassel may be under consideration.
"When you talk about evaluating the quarterback, you look at [everything]," coach Jason Garrett said Monday. "You look at what we're asking him to do and how he handles that, and then how he executes those plays on a consistent basis, week in and week out, and you look at the overall production of the quarterback.
"The quarterback is one of those positions where you don't isolate him. His impact on the offense is important. His impact on the football team is important. You put all of those factors together, and you try to make your best judgment."
Weeden, 31, had his worst performance yet in Sunday's 30-6 loss to the New England Patriots. Weeden completed 26 of 39 passes for 188 yards with no touchdowns, an interception and a 67.0 passer rating in losing his 11th consecutive game as a starter.
