 Draft Scout Case Keenum News
09/06/10 - LOOKING GOOD: Just about everything looked good for the Houston Cougars against Texas State. In one half, the Cougars were up 54-7 and QB Case Keenum tossed five touchdowns and threw for 274 yards. The defense was also pretty good, at least until the team was already up 68-7 in the third quarter when letting off the throttle was understandable. Several defensive players played especially well, including LB Matt Nicholson, who had two takeaways and a defensive TD, and a trio of defenders who had 11 tackles apiece in LB Marcus McGraw, LB Efrem Oliphant and DB Kent Brooks. Oliphant is a true freshman.
09/04/10 - SCOUTING THE OFFENSE: Case Keenum wants to elevate his national perception from one of gimmicky, stat-compiling quarterback to legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate. Head coach Kevin Sumlin and three returning wide receivers who all had more than 1,000 yards in 2009 are all on the same page and hope to do their part to make Keenum's senior season a special one. Some help from the run game and offensive line would be nice for balance sake, but the reality is the Cougars are again expected to be as explosive an offense as there is in the nation.
09/04/10 - THIS WEEK'S GAME: Texas State at Houston, Sept. 4 - It might be nice for Houston assistant head coach Tony Levine and offensive coordinator Jason Phillips to catch up with old friends Saturday as both are former Texas State assistant coaches. Then again, nobody is expecting the Cougars to be very hospitable to the visiting Bobcats. KEYS TO THE GAME: Houston can be scored on, regardless of how much better the Cougars want you to think their new defense is. To have a chance against Houston, you can't squander offensive opportunities, and disrupting the early-season rhythm of QB Case Keenum would be nice, even if unlikely. PLAYERS TO WATCH: QB Case Keenum - Everyone knows the Cougars offense will be electric, but it's how quickly Keenum can find his comfort zone that fans of the program will be most interested in seeing. Assuming that happens out of the gate against Texas State in Saturday's opener, the already-high expectations surrounding the program only get higher.
09/04/10 - Case Keenum completed 17 of 22 passes for 274 yards and five touchdowns to lead Houston to a 68-28 rout of Texas State Saturday in front of the largest crowd to watch a game at Robertson Stadium, 32,119. Keenum only played the first half, but had touchdown passes of 40 yards to Michael Hayes, 63 yards to Patrick Edwards, 25 and 21 yards to Kierrie Johnson and 17 yards to James Cleveland as Houston built a 54-7 halftime lead. He also had two interceptions. Beall rushed five times for 48 yards and two touchdowns for the Cougars, who extended their home winning streak to a school-record 16 games and finished with 499 yards of offense. Texas State quarterback Tyler Arndt was 14-of-22 passing for 153 yards and a touchdown, and added two touchdown runs. Karrington Bush and Dexter Imade both had 73 yards rushing for the Bobcats. - AP Sports
09/03/10 - One would imagine that with the record-setting offense the Houston Cougars have in place, coupled with what has frankly been an awful defense in recent years, practices can be a little one-sided. You might be surprised. "I tell people, 'I'm more concerned about our offense than the defense,'" Houston wide receiver Tyron Carrier told the Houston Chronicle. "They're out here handling their business. They whipped our butt out here a lot more days than we whipped theirs. That's a real good sign." Considering nobody is expecting a drop off with the Cougars offense, what with Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Case Keenum and three 1,000-yard wide receivers from 2009 returning to the lineup, if the defense is indeed holding its own in preseason camp, the Cougars could indeed be ready for something special.
