04/27/09 - Passed over in this weekend's NFL draft, former UL quarterback Michael Desormeaux, running back Tyrell Fenroy and wide receiver Jason Chery quickly found homes as rookie free agents. Chery will ink a deal later this week with the Carolina Panthers. Chery will join a Carolina team that recently agreed to a five-year, $42.5 million contract extension with former UL quarterback Jake Delhomme, a Breaux Bridge native. The Haiti native is waiting to sign the contract offer until after his agent has a chance to look over the deal. He is expected to sign when he arrives for mini-camp later this week. Chery also got contract offers from the New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers, but he and his agent decided that Carolina was the best place for him. As a senior, Chery earned second team all-league honors after scoring 11 touchdowns and averaging 21.7 yards per kickoff return. He was second in the Sun Belt with 1,921 all-purpose yards and seven receiving touchdowns. He also had 14 tackles on special teams. "They really wanted me, so that's the place I wanted to go," Chery said of Carolina. "We did our homework and looked at the guys each team had at receiver and on special teams. Carolina didn't have a kickoff or punt return guy, and I think I can do that for them." - Joshua Parrott, The Advertiser
