 Draft Scout William Ford News
02/19/10 - Daily rehabilitation and encouragement from family and the coaching staff has allowed Ford to even jog under his full power. If anything, Ford said the injury has made him work “a little bit harder” toward regaining his full range of movement which made him an All-American. “I feel great right now,” he said. “You can’t rush it and I’m not trying to rush it. At the same time, I feel good and I think everything is going to work out.” As Ford prepares to continue his rehab in Columbia, he’s not expected to receive full clearance in time for S.C. State Pro Day on March 31. At the same time, Ford is optimistic about an NFL team giving him a chance either through the draft set for April 22-24 or as a rookie free agent. Regardless of what Ford’s future holds, he’s more than at peace with his legacy with the Bulldogs. “(I want to be remembered) Not only did I help this team win, that I was a model citizen in Orangeburg,” Ford said. “I tried to keep myself clean and this whole experience at South Carolina State was a blessing.” - Thomas Grant Jr., The Times and Democrat
01/12/10 - 2009 ALL-MEAC FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM: RB Will Ford Sr. S.C. State Travelers Rest, S.C., has been selected First-Team All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for the 2009 college football season as voted on by the MEAC head football coaches and sports information directors. Ford, the 2008 MEAC Offensive Player of the Year and the 2009 preseason pick, rushed for 1010 yards - his third straight season reaching the 1000-yard plateau - to run his career total to 4,650 and become the SC State and MEAC all-time leading rusher. He is a Payton Award Candidate for a second straight year. - South Carolina State football
12/01/09 - Will Ford saw his illustrious college football career end with a knee injury in the third quarter of South Carolina State’s Football Championship Subdivision playoff loss to Appalachian State Saturday. On Thursday, the school and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference’s all-time leader will find out how soon he’ll be able to resume pursuit of a professional career. Ford is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery to determine the severity of the injury. “I think it’s a little bit more to it than it is,” Ford said. “I was hoping it would be less ... but I think I should still have time to train and rehab.” Ford’s injury will prevent him from participating in the Dec. 19 Russell Athletic HBCU Bowl at the Cramton Bowl in Birmingham, Ala. The 2 p.m. All-Star game will feature the top players from the MEAC and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference coached by Florida A&M’s Joe Taylor facing those chosen from the Southwestern Athletic Conference and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference coached by Alabama State’s Reggie Barlow. - Thomas Grant Jr., The Times and Democrat
11/29/09 - The end came sooner for Will Ford than it ultimately did for South Carolina State Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium. It came with 2:04 remaining and the Bulldogs trying to drive downfield for the go-ahead score against Appalachian State. With the Mountaineers’ defense shutting down the Bulldogs’ rushing game, Ford looked to catch a short pass from quarterback Malcolm Long for a first down. Ford was tackled two yards shy of the first down and began to favor his left knee. The team trainers rushed to the field and helped carry the all-time Bulldog and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rushing leader to the sidelines. As Ford cheered the team from the training table with his sprained knee wrapped in ice, little did he realize it was the last time he would carry the football in college. For the Travelers Rest native, how the Bulldogs lost 20-13 to Appalachian State was less important than seeing his prolific college career abruptly end. “It was like a freak accident,” Ford said. “I knew it wasn’t good when I went down, but it’s just part of the game. You work hard, you work hard and you fall short and it crushes you. Being a senior, I didn’t want it to end like this. It’s something you have to deal with. I thought we played great, but we didn’t play good enough.” A year after rushing for 117 yards and a touchdown against Appalachian State, Ford was held to just 22 yards on eight carries. As it turns out, it was just enough to allow Ford to win the MEAC rushing title over Hampton’s LaMarcus Coker for the second straight year with 1,032 yards. Yet for all the records and Player of the Year awards, Ford very much wanted to compete for a national championship. “We had a great season, but I’m still disappointed because we didn’t win a national championship,” said Ford, who finished his career with 4,672 yards. - Orangeburg Times Democrat
11/24/09 - 2009 WALTER PAYTON AWARD CANDIDATE FINALIST: William Ford, South Carolina State, Senior, 5-11, 200, Running Back, Travelers Rest, S.C. STATS: 189 carries, 1,026 yards rushing, 8 rushing touchdowns, 5.4 average, 18 catches, 122 yards receiving, 2 receiving touchdowns, 6.8 average, 1,990 all- purpose yards, 11 games played. Ford is the motor behind South Carolina State's 16th-ranked scoring offense. The senior ranks 20th nationally in rushing and has been significant in the Bulldogs' two straight MEAC championships. He owns the school record for most 100-yard rushing games with 12, four of which have come this season. Ford rushed for a season-high 156 yards and a score in a win over Winston-Salem State, breaking the all-time MEAC rushing record with 3,277 career rushing yards. This is Ford's second appearance on the Payton Award list. He finished 12th last season. - The Sports Network
