Draft Scout *Chandler Jones News
08/24/14 - DE Chandler Jones led the Patriots with 11.5 sacks in his second season last fall. This summer the 2012 first-round pick has been spending most of his time working as an outside linebacker in New England's 3-4 front. The work he's put in on the practice field came to a head in Friday night's win over the Panthers as Jones was dominant in the first half, recording six solo tackles, two sacks, three tackles for a loss and a pair of quarterback hits.
"He's a versatile player and he's very conscientious to try to do whatever we ask him to do and playing in all those different spots," coach Bill Belichick said of Jones' work at outside linebacker. "He's a very athletic player with good length, good playing strength so he has a lot of versatility athletically, he has a lot of versatility mentally. He's tried to work on the techniques at those positions and that just gives our defense more flexibility. We'll see how it all goes from game to game or during the season but he's definitely shown the ability to play multiple spots and play them productively."
12/17/13 - DE Chandler Jones seemed to deal with some cramping in the hot weather of Miami, though he missed just a few snaps.
10/22/13 - DE Chandler Jones had a pair of sacks against Geno Smith and the Jets, giving the second-year pass rusher a team-high 6.5 sacks through seven games. Jones also tied for a game-high with 11 tackles. He was New England's most active defender in the loss in New York, as has been the case for much of the season for the Patriots defensive front.
"I thought that Chandler played very competitively," coach Bill Belichick said. "Look, with every player there are always plays that could be better. I wouldn't say that about anybody after almost any game. He definitely had some disruptive plays. Chandler had plays in both the running game and the passing game that were disruptive and physical plays. I think that he's strung a few weeks here together and hopefully we can continue, he can continue to do that."
09/18/13 - DE Chandler Jones has been bumping down a spot to play defensive tackle in some sub looks for the Patriots defense through the first two weeks of 2013. The first-round pick from a year ago had a pair of sacks in the Week 2 win over the Jets, and coach Bill Belichick thinks moving him inside over the offensive guard can great some matchup issues for the opposition.
"I think anytime you move those defensive ends inside, they obviously are a little bit smaller physically but the quickness and the length they have over most traditional defensive tackles can cause those inside guys – guards and centers – some problems in protection just because they're not used to seeing that type of player inside," Belichick said. "I think it's a tradeoff. Chandler has all those attributes: he's long, he's very athletic and he's not nearly as big as our defensive tackles so that's kind of the tradeoff."
08/18/13 - DE Chandler Jones recorded one of New England's four sacks on the first four drives against Josh Freeman and the Bucs in the second week of preseason action. In fact, the Patriots held Freeman and the Tampa offense to a total of just 8 yards on their first two drives while forcing a pair of punts. The pressure up front was a big part of that, and is something the Patriots hope will be an improved aspect of the defense in 2013.
"It felt great," Jones said of the defense making plays. "The first snap from scrimmage was a sack by Brandon Spikes. It was great. They called a blitz and he came in free. It's just good to see a quarterback having a hard time trying to complete passes because he's getting so much pressure."
