Draft Scout Landry Jones News
09/01/13 - QB Landry Jones (fourth round) becomes the highest-drafted player at his position to make the team as a rookie since Ben Roethlisberger (1st) in 2004.
06/13/13 - QB Landry Jones signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who know have their entire draft class under contract.
Financial terms of the four-year deal were not disclosed.
Landry was drafted in the fourth round after setting an Oklahoma career record by starting 48 consecutive games. He als set school and Big 12 Conference career records by completing 1,388 of 2,183 passes for 16,646 yards and 123 touchdowns.
Landry isn't necessarily viewed as the heir apparent to Ben Roethlisbeger. While he set numerous passing records at Oklahoma, he never developed into the elite pro prospect the Sooners envisioned after a stellar freshman season taking over for Sam Bradford.
Jones needs to prove he can make solid progressions through his routes and make the transition to playing under center in the NFL. And while Jones has a strong arm, he lacks consistent accuracy to all levels.
This year, Jones will compete with veterans Bruce Gradkowski and John Parker Wilson as the Steelers attempt to get younger behind Roethlisberger after years of relying on Charlie Batch and Byron Leftwich.
04/28/13 - A closer look at the Steelers' picks: Round 4/115 - Landry Jones, QB, 6-3, 221, Oklahoma...Started all four years (50 games) and set Big 12 and Oklahoma records with 16,646 yards and 123 touchdowns. Steelers not looking for Ben Roethlisberger's replacement but to get younger at the position after years of Charlie Batch/Byron Leftwich. - The Sports Xchange
04/28/13 - Landry Jones, the Steelers' rookie quarterback, is married to Whitney Hand, who played basketball at Oklahoma University with Ben Roethlisberger's sister Carlee, who was in their wedding. QUOTES TO NOTE: "I just think it was time to start grooming a new player, freshen up the room if you will." -- QB coach Randy Fichtner on adding rookie Landry Jones to his meeting room. - The Sports Xchange
03/17/13 - 2013 Oklahoma Pro Day: Landry Jones, QB (6-foot-4, 225 pounds) - Jones kept his numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine (he was a top performer in his position group in the vertical jump, broad jump, three-cone drill and 20-yard short shuttle). Noted quarterbacks guru George Whitfield - who has worked with the previous two No. 1 overall picks, Andrew Luck and Cam Newton, among others - put Jones through a on-field program that included 70 passes thrown, with a heavy concentration on middle-to deep-pass routes. Of those 70 passes, 66 were completed and only one of those incompletions was a bad throw.
Jones is the fourth-rated quarterback prospect (No. 57 overall) on my top-100 big board. Among those on hand in Norman, Okla. from NFL teams included Pittsburgh Steelers quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner, Jacksonville Jaguars quarterbacks coach Frank Scelfo and Cincinnati Bengals defensive line coach Jay Hayes. - Gil Brandt, NFL.com
