Draft Scout Courtney Upshaw News
05/25/16 - LB Courtney Upshaw is getting a look at defensive end.
Upshaw, a former second-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens, is 6-feet-2 and 272 pounds.
"They are trying to figure out where they want to play me," Upshaw said. "I'm just trying to learn every position that they want me to learn. So that I can go in there and compete."
Upshaw, 26, started 51 games over the past four seasons. He helped the Ravens win a Super Bowl, and has amassed 183 tackles, 5.0 sacks, seven passes breakups and three forced fumbles.
The former second-round pick out of Alabama signed a one-year, $1.25 million deal with the Falcons this offseason that included a $390,000 signing bonus.
"He's a big man so you can see just from the end of the line how hard it is to run over to his side so we're going to put him at defensive end," Falcons coach Dan Quinn said. "I know he can play (strong-side) linebacker, so we're going to try him at some defensive end this spring and see what that looks like.
"As we get closer to it we'll navigate the roles, but now's the time, in my opinion, to create the experiments. What you can do and see if we can have the vision for the player come to life."
03/27/16 - LB Courtney Upshaw, who became an unrestricted free agent with the Ravens March 9, agreed to terms with the Falcons Friday (March 25).
12/28/15 - LB Courtney Upshaw overcame a huge mistake with a key play. Cornerback Jimmy Smith had 101-yard interception return negated by an offside penalty by Upshaw. However, Upshaw responded with a key, fourth-quarter sack on Ben Roethlisberger that pushed the Steelers back to secnd and 18. The Ravens eventually stopped Pittsburgh and held on for the victory.
06/06/14 - LB Courtney Upshaw is no longer 295 pounds, the weight he carried around last spring while sluggishly struggling through practice sessions. Although Upshaw isn't that big this year, he acknowledged that he's still heavier than desired.
Upshaw got down to 272 pounds for last season, but is clearly bigger than that right now.
"I'm feeling good, I'm still working," Upshaw told The Baltimore Sun. "The weight ain't where it needs to be, where I want it to be. It's a grind.
"That's why you might see me in long sleeves and be like, 'Courtney, it's hot out here. Why are you in long sleeves?' I'm working, man, the cardio, getting it in. It's a whole new mindset. I'm doing the right things."
Ravens coach John Harbaugh identified progress in Upshaw, especially compared to last year when he was struggling to move around the practice field. This year, Upshaw's mobility appears normal.
"He looks like he's in really good shape," Harbaugh said of Upshaw. "We'll start monitoring the weight a little bit more closely. He's in the ballpark. It's not like he's out of shape weight-wise. He's close. No problem getting through practice, he looks good. We're happy with him."
Unlike a year ago when personal issues had him spending a significant amount of time away from the team back in Alabama, Upshaw has been a regular at the Ravens' offseason training program this spring.
"I feel good, man," Upshaw said. "I'm just honestly at a different level with my mindset going into the season. I'm trying to do things differently than what I used to. I was able to be here more than my second year here and not come in too much overweight. It's always going to be a grind because I can gain weight faster than I lose it."
10/18/13 - LB Courtney Upshaw (foot) was limited Friday and listed as questionable.
