Draft Scout Derek Wolfe News
10/12/15 - DE Derek Wolfe, who was reinstated from reserve/suspended Monday, had his roster exemption lifted Saturday by the Broncos (Oct. 10).
10/07/15 - Now that defensive lineman Derek Wolfe is back on the roster, where does he fit in the Broncos' defensive line rotation?
A year ago, he was one of the Broncos' starters at defensive end, and rotated in to defensive tackle on some pass-rush downs. He played 67 percent of the Broncos' snaps last season, more than every defensive lineman but DeMarcus Ware, who was then an end in the 4-3 alignment the Broncos used last year.
With the Broncos in a 3-4 scheme and ends Malik Jackson, Vance Walker and Antonio Smith all playing well, there might not be room for Wolfe to play as much as he did last year.
"We have a really competitive environment there right now," Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said. "It's a nice problem to try to figure out who will be suiting (up). It's a good group."
Wolfe quickly got back up to speed this week, making it through a grueling workout Monday and receiving a full practice workload two days later. It would be no surprise if the Broncos take their time with getting him close to the same number of snaps he had last year. But he could keep the rest of the defensive line fresh.
10/06/15 - DE Derek Wolfe returned from his four-game PED suspension Monday (Oct. 5). Wolfe was replaced by Antonio Smith and Vance Walker in the lineup, with Smith playing mostly in pass-rush situations and Walker working in base-package downs. Wolfe received a roster exemption that expires next Monday (Oct. 12).
09/06/15 - DE Derek Wolfe was placed on reserve/suspended by Broncos the Saturday (Sept. 5) for the first four games of the season.
07/24/15 - DE Derek Wolfe tested positive for performancing enhancing drugs and was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the 2015 season and is eligible to return to the Denver Broncos' roster on October 5.
Wolfe said he took a medication in the offseason that did not boost performance in any way and claimed he was unaware it was on the NFL's banned substances list.
"I was genuinely unaware it was prohibited," Wolfe said in a team-issued statement. "But players are responsible for what is in their bodies. I will certainly exercise far greater caution in the future and will seek advice relating to the permissibility of any and all medications."
Wolfe can participate in all workouts until the start of the regular season and is eligible for all preseason games.
