Draft Scout James Develin News
11/15/17 - FB James Develin played a career-high 45 snaps in last Sunday night's win in Denver.
Though Develin had a pair of catches in the game giving him five for the season, the former college defensive lineman's value certainly isn't measured on the stat sheet. In the past, head coach Bill Belichick has compared Develin to a hockey player who does the dirty work in the corners to get the puck, but doesn't score too often. This week, Belichick had even more praise for the physical fifth-year veteran who is also a core special teamer. "He's the ultimate team player," Belichick said.
03/06/17 - FB James Develin agreed to a two-year contract just ahead of free agency. Develin, an impending unrestricted free agent, was one of the lead blockers last season for LeGarrette Blount, who had 1,161 rushing yards and a franchise-record 18 rushing touchdowns. Develin, 28, has been with the Patriots since 2012, playing in every game in three of the last four seasons. He missed the 2015 season with a broken leg suffered in training camp.
12/21/16 - FB James Develin has seen his reps and role grow a bit since tight end Rob Gronkowski went down with a back injury. The versatile veteran, who works out with the tight-end group most of the time in practice, had a career-high 43 snaps in Sunday's win in Denver in the Patriots' run-heavy approach. He also notched his second reception of the season, a 13-yard gain.
Also a core special teams player and one of the more respected players in the New England locker room, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has always appreciated the work his fullback puts in.
"James has got a very important role in the offense," McDaniels said. "He does a lot of things that may not show on a statistical sheet, but whether he's a lead blocker or pass protector, he's helping in protection in some way. He's in on a lot of short-yardage and goal-line situations that are always critical plays in the game that determine possession or points. We've talked a lot this year about just our overall toughness and if you're tough, you know what to do, and you'll do your assignment the right way, it would be hard for us not to feel good about putting those guys on the field. James has really been dependable, he's very tough, he's an unselfish player, he's a great teammate. He's very intelligent, knows what to do, learns his role and tries to do everything we ask him to do on a week-to-week basis. He's earned his opportunities and he's helped us be productive when he's on the field. Any time anybody does that, you'd like to give him more."
03/08/16 - FB James Develin, scheduled to become a restricted free agent on March 9, was re-signed to a one-year contract by the Patriots Tuesday (March 8).
09/02/15 - FB James Develin was placed on reserve/injured by the Patriots Tuesday (Sept. 1).
