 Draft Scout Javorris Jackson News
04/23/09 - Savannah State University senior Javorris Jackson said he will “keep my ear to the phone” as he watches the NFL draft Saturday and Sunday with his family and friends in Detroit. His brother, Grady Jackson, is a defensive lineman for the Detroit Lions. Javorris Jackson, a 6-foot-4, 216-pound free safety, said he has signed with agent Ray Brownell of National Sports Management in New York. “My agent told me he has spoken with the Jets, Packers, Lions, Falcons, Jaguars, Titans and Raiders about me,” Jackson told the Savannah Morning News on Tuesday night from Detroit. “If I’m not taken in the seventh round then I’ll try to make a team through free agency. But I’m on the radar.” Jackson, 28, admits the possibility of being drafted is slim because he is considered old by NFL rookie standards. The Jaguars, however, sent a scout to an SSU practice to evaluate Jackson last season. The Chiefs sent a scout to SSU’s game at Mississippi Valley State to watch him. Jackson said he is projected to play as a free safety, strong safety, linebacker or on special teams. “I’ll take any of them,” he said. “All I’m looking for is an opportunity.” Because SSU does not conduct a Pro Day for NFL scouts, Jackson did not get to work out for teams. He was not invited to participate in the NFL Scouting Combine. “I didn’t have a Pro Day because Georgia and Georgia Tech wouldn’t let me come,” he said. “I was invited to Clark Atlanta’s Pro Day but once I got there the head coach wasn’t there, and the (NFL) scouts and other (Clark Atlanta) coaches wouldn’t let me perform. His assistants said they didn’t know anything about it. The only thing (NFL scouts) are going by is my film.” Jackson was second at SSU in tackles (87) and interceptions (four) last season. He played in the eighth annual East Coast Bowl in Petersburg, Va. - Noell Barnidge, Savannah Now
11/20/08 - 2008 EAST COAST BOWL: Savannah State's football team will play its season finale Saturday against North Carolina Central in Durham, N.C., but it won't be SSU senior Javorris Jackson's final game. Jackson, a 6-foot-4, 216-pound free safety, has been chosen to play in the eighth annual East Coast Bowl on Nov. 29 in Petersburg, Va. In January, Jackson will move to Atlanta to train for April's NFL draft with his brother, Grady Jackson, a defensive tackle for the Atlanta Falcons. Javorris admits the possibility of being drafted by an NFL team is slim. After all, he turned 28 on Nov. 11, and it is doubtful a team would draft a player considered old by NFL standards. If Javorris is not drafted, he said he will attempt to get a tryout with an NFL team and earn a roster spot as a free agent. "Getting invited to (a team's training) camp would be a good thing for me," he said. "I will try somewhere to get in. I'll try to find some back door, some crack somewhere, just to get in. There are always ways in." - Noell Barnidge, Savannah Morning News
