 Draft Scout Justin Blalock News
04/30/07 - A closer look at the Falcons' picks: Round 2/39 Justin Blalock, OG, 6-3, 320, Texas, Atlanta considered moving up as high as No. 28 because it felt Blalock would be gone but it couldn't find a trade partner. Blalock fell to the Falcons and gave them the massive pile mover Petrino wants up front as they transition from a zone-blocking scheme to more in-line blocking.
04/30/07 - FALCONS BEST PICK: Texas's mammoth guard Justin Blalock (6-3, 320) is the big-bodied trench grinder Petrino said he wanted up front when he first took the job. The fact that Atlanta got him in the second round was a bonus, since he was rated as the top guard by some draft analysts. Blalock spent most of his career with the Longhorns playing right tackle before moving to right guard. He will start at left guard for Atlanta, a position that was vacated when starter Matt Lehr was released in free agency.
04/28/07 - Mock Draft: Rob Rang: 33. Oakland: Justin Blalock, OL, Texas -- Regardless of which quarterback the Raiders select, they need help up front.
04/28/07 - Mock Draft: Derek Harper: 29. Baltimore: OL Justin Blalock, Texas -- Critics say Blalock lacks the arm reach for tackle and is too tall for guard at 6-3. What he is, however, is versatile and very athletic. With the Ravens, he could step in immediately for departed LG Edwin Mulitalo while the team studies whether he can take over LT Jonathan Ogden, who appears likely to call it quits after next season.
04/24/07 - Draft Value: Like Beekman, height is the only thing keeping Blalock from being ranked considerably higher by NFL teams who won't make him a first-round pick. Starting a school-record 51 consecutive games, Blalock's lack of quickness in drills could force him inside to guard, which reduces his value on draft day. On the field, however, Blalock didn't allow a sack in 27 consecutive games to finish his career - the first 20 of which he played at right tackle.
