 Draft Scout Justin Blalock News
12/24/08 - LG Justin Blalock is having a stellar sophomore season.Blalock is developing into a solid blocker, and both Falcons head coach Mike Smith and offensive line coach Paul Boudreau called his effort against Minnesota's Pro Bowl tackle Kevin Williams his best of the season. "Justin, I thought played his best game," Smith said. Williams was held to just three tackles. He did get some penetration over right guard Harvey Dahl. Now that the Falcons know Blalock can handle Pro Bowl quality talent, they want to see him do it every week. "He's starting to play pretty good," Boudreau said. "When Justin was matched up against (Williams) he did a nice job. We have to make sure that he does it every week." Blalock was part of the unit that gave up 47 sacks last season. With coaching from NFL veteran Boudreau, he has progressed quickly. He has much better technique, recognition and footwork. He had trouble picking up stunts last season while being coached by a rookie NFL assistant. The offensive line gave up two sacks to the Vikings. But before the Vikings game, they'd allowed just one sack over the last five games. This season the Falcons have given up just 16 sacks on 413 passing attempts. They are on pace to shatter the team record low of 25 sacks allowed set in 1982 on 219 passing attempts. "We'd have to really go crazy not to break that record," Boudreau said. Blalock doesn't see the Falcons caving in against the Rams or taking the 2-13 squad lightly. "It's not going to be an issue at all," Blalock said. "As far as preparing hard every week, this is no different." For Blalock, this season is more in line with what he thought his NFL experience would be after being picked in the second round of the 2007 NFL draft. "This is awesome, a complete 180 from my rookie season," Blalock said.
12/22/08 - LG Justin Blalock became the first Falcons offensive lineman to record a touchdown since Oct. 27, 1996 when Robbie Tobeck accomplished the feat. Blalock scored his touchdown after recovering a fumble in the end zone.
02/07/08 - LG Justin Blalock was initially pegged as a can't-miss player but he was unable to get away from his nice-guy personality on game days and was victimized frequently. He was benched for two games after mentally and physically tapping out but he did finish the final two games with some promise.
12/24/07 - LG Justin Blalock is expected to start the season finale after returning to the starting lineup vs. Arizona Sunday. Blalock was inactive for two games after the coaching staff felt he was mentally and physically expired.
12/19/07 - LG Justin Blalock will be back in the starting lineup after being inactive the past two games. The coaching staff felt that Blalock had hit the rookie wall, so he was given a few weeks to get physically and mentally refreshed.
