Draft Scout Matt Johnson News
08/27/14 - S Matt Johnson cleared waivers and was placed on reserve/injured Wednesday (Aug. 27) by the Cowboys.
07/30/14 - S Matt Johnson is out again with a sore hamstring. Johnson, a former fourth round pick in 2012, has yet to play a down for the Cowboys. Hamstring injuries robbed him of his rookie year and a fractured foot sidelined him as a sophomore.
06/13/14 - FS Matt Johnson is again on the sideline and watching the Cowboys practice. He was held out of OTA practices the past two weeks because of a hamstring injury. It's a common theme for Johnson, who has hardly been healthy since the Cowboys drafted him in the fourth round in 2012. He has never played in a regular-season game.
He has been slowed by hamstring injuries so much that he has hardly practiced. He managed to get on the field for the preseason opener last year, but then suffered an ankle injury just a few plays in.
"Our attitude is to try to give him an opportunity to show us what he can do," Garrett said. "We feel like what he's done up to this point is worthy of us having some patience with him."
This year, he began the offseason and OTAs healthy, but last week, another hamstring injury sidelined him.
"The interesting thing about Matt is that every time we've given him an opportunity, he seems to do a pretty good job, whether it's in practice or some of the scrimmage situations that he's been in."
Garrett said: "He just needs time on task. He needs to get out there. It seems to me that he's got a real good approach mentally. He continues to work. He doesn't seem outwardly frustrated; I'm sure he is. But he's just got to continue to work through it, get himself healthy. We're going to try to give him every chance to show us what he can do. We'll continue to be patient, make sure he gets healthy, and when the time comes, see if he can compete for one of these jobs."
09/01/13 - S Matt Johnson (foot) was placed on reserve/injured by the Cowboys Saturday.
08/27/13 - S Matt Johnson remains sidelined with the stress reaction in his ankle. He has missed the last three preseason games and has yet to return to practice. The Cowboys are being cautious as they don't want it to turn into a stress fracture. Now his roster spot is in jeopardy.
