07/22/14 - QB A.J. McCarron (shoulder) was declared active/non-football injury by the Bengals Monday (July 21).
05/13/14 - 2014 NFL DRAFT BEST VALUE PICK: CINCINNATI BENGALS: Round 5/164 -- AJ McCarron, quarterback, 6-3, 220, Alabama...The Bengals got their developmental quarterback behind Andy Dalton. McCarron is a proven winner, and it wouldn't be insane to see him competing to start next season should problems arise with Dalton. - The Sports Xchange
05/12/14 - Loomis and Payton are constantly reminded by fans that the team needs to start looking for the quarterback of the future since Drew Brees will turn 36 just after the completion of the 2014 season. Payton admitted after the conclusion of the draft they had their eye on three Southeastern Conference quarterbacks -- LSU's Zach Mettenberger, Georgia's Aaron Murray and Alabama's AJ McCarron -- in the closing rounds Saturday. McCarron and Murray were chosen in the fifth round, just before the Saints went on the clock at Nos. 167 and 169, and Mettenberger was taken two picks into the sixth round. "Those three players were guys we looked closely at and begin to see a value once it got into the later rounds, where our grades were a little bit better than maybe where they were selected," Payton said. "They were in the discussion and talked about." - The Sports Xchange

05/12/14 - The Bengals waited until the fifth round, but finally purchased insurance for the Andy Dalton situation by selecting Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron. Dalton enters the final year of his contract and hasn't been able to agree to an extension with the club despite ongoing talks. A possibility exists Dalton could play out the final year of his deal as Joe Flacco did with Baltimore in 2012. It opens up the risk Dalton could become too expensive to sign or struggle enough the Bengals decide to let him walk and go another direction. That could be McCarron. For now, that will involve sitting back and learning from Dalton and current backup Jason Campbell for a year. "This is not about Andy Dalton," Jackson said. "This is really about improving the room. He's a tremendous football player, he played in a lot of big games at Alabama, we have a lot of respect for his talent, his ability and again, our whole thing here in Cincinnati is trying to improve everywhere that we can. We're adding another good football player to an already talented room and going to let guys compete." - The Sports Xchange
