Draft Scout Chaz Sutton News
02/17/14 - 2014 NFL COMBINE SNUB: Defensive End – Chaz Sutton, South Carolina...Rushing off the edge opposite Jadeveon Clowney, Sutton totaled the same number of sacks (three) in 2013 as the future 1st rounder. He needs to play more controlled and finish, but he has some intriguing tools to stop the run and disrupt the pocket – he just struggles to do it consistently. OTHER DE SNUBS: Walker May (Vanderbilt), Ben Gardner (Stanford), Denico Autry (Mississippi State) - Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.com
09/06/13 - Scouting the South Carolina run defense: A strength of the Gamecocks for several seasons and it continued against North Carolina. South Carolina limited the Tar Heels to 99 yards on 36 attempts for an average of 2.8 yards per attempt. Using a multitude of linemen on a hot night, South Carolina dominated the Tar Heel offensive line throughout the game which took a toll on the fast pace offensive attack UNC wanted to employ. - The Sports Xchange
08/29/13 - PLAYERS TO WATCH: DE Chaz Sutton was a highly regarded high school prospect who signed with USC after de-committing from Florida. The senior, who has already graduated, has finally made the starting lineup following an outstanding junior campaign in which he garnered five sacks as a reserve. "There were certain times in my life when I wanted to make that jump or make that move to another university," said Sutton. "But, at the same time, I talked to my family and they said stick around, God has a plan for you. I stuck it out and things are turning out great for me now."
QUOTE TO NOTE: "(Jadeveon Clowney) is a great player, but I see myself as a great player too on this defense. We'll have to see what happens when the games start. Some teams might believe in the guy on the left side to block him all night. It might go bad or it might go well. You just never know what is going to happen." -- Senior defensive end Chaz Sutton on whether or not it will be easier for him with Clowney probably getting double- and triple-teamed on the opposite side of the defensive line. - The Sports Xchange
08/29/13 - TOP SOUTH CAROLINA PROSPECTS FOR THE 2014 NFL DRAFT: 2. DE Chaz Sutton (6-3, 256, 4.82)...Clowney is the known commodity but South Carolina coaches are excited about the breakout potential Sutton offers in 2013. A highly versatile defender who earned snaps as a defensive tackle, defensive end and stand-up linebacker for the Gamecocks last year, Sutton recorded 25 tackles, seven tackles for loss and five sacks as a junior, all career-highs. With Taylor now attempting to make the Detroit Lions' roster, Sutton is expected to take over his role as the starting defensive end opposite Clowney.
The attention Clowney is sure to receive should only help Sutton, whose best traits are his long arms and impressive closing speed. Sutton possesses only average initial burst off the snap but wastes little time with blockers, showing a quick rip and a strong lower body to bulldoze through opponents and into the pocket. He is frequently used on stunts, giving him some open lanes from which to attack. He's a bit stiff in his upper body, leading to some quicker ball-carriers being able to elude him in the open field. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com
05/08/13 - 5/7/2013 NFL DRAFT SCOUT RISER: 5. Chaz Sutton, DE, South Carolina: The "other" defensive end from South Carolina, Sutton doesn't have nearly the name notoriety of teammate and future top draft pick Jadeveon Clowney, but he won't be overlooked by NFL scouts. Forced to play behind Clowney, Melvin Ingram and Devin Taylor the past two seasons, Sutton has only six career sacks, but as fifth-year senior in 2013, it wouldn't be a shock if he comes close to doubling his career sack total.
He saw one start a year ago and was often subbed in on passing downs, sometimes at defensive tackle just to get him on the field. Although it will be tough to take your eyes off Clowney when watching the Gamecocks in 2013, it'll be worth it when Sutton takes advantage of all the attention blockers give to Clowney's side of the field. - Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.com
