12/12/13 - 2013 ALL-BIG 12 HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): Chris Whaley (DL)...Has been selected Honorable Mention All-Big 12 for the 2013 college football season by the Big 12 Coaches. - Texas football
11/11/13 - A senior who was having a strong senior season, Texas DT Chris Whaley is done for the year after suffering an undisclosed knee injury in the first quarter Saturday. A former running back, he was a late bloomer and was one of the positive surprises for the Longhorns on defense in 2013, recording 25 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and two defensive touchdowns.
Known as a leader in the huddle, Whaley is an active, athletic player who made it a habit of penetrating the backfield this season. Listed at 6-3 and 295 pounds, he was an undrafted free agent entering the season, but his impressive senior campaign put him in the third day discussion. However, the severity of his knee injury will determine his draft stock from here. Sophomore RB Johnathan Gray, who is not draft-eligible, was also lost for the season due to an Achilles injury. - Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.com
11/11/13 - Longhorns lose DT Chris Whaley, RB Johnathan Gray for season...Texas's win at West Virginia vaulted them back into the top 25, kept them perfect in Big 12 play, and sets up a colossal matchup with Oklahoma State this Saturday for the right to be Baylor's biggest challenger for the league title. But it still came at tremendous cost, as the Longhorns announced Sunday that both defensive tackle Chris Whaley and running back Johnathan Gray would miss the remainder of the season with injuries suffered in Morgantown. Whaley suffered an undisclosed knee injury in the first quarter, while Gray went down with a noncontact Achilles tendon injury after catching a pass in the third.
Both players have been major contributors for the 7-2 'Horns. Gray is the team's leading rusher, with 780 yards and four touchdowns on a 4.9 yards-per-carry average. He has also added 15 receptions in the passing game. Whaley, the former high school running back, had one of the team's most consistent penetrators on the defensive line and had posted two sacks and five tackles-for-loss, both good for fourth on the team. Whaley had also scored a pair of defensive touchdowns, including one on the season-salvaging win over Oklahoma. A senior, Whaley appears to have played his final game as a Longhorn. Gray is a sophomore and will return in 2014. - Jerry Hinnen, CBSSports.com
