Draft Scout Snapshot: A closer look at the Falcons' picks: Round 1/22 - Desmond Trufant, CB, 6-0, 190, Washington...He will become the third Trufant to make it to the NFL. His brothers, Marcus (Seattle) and Isaiah (Jets), already are in the league. The youngest Trufant is a big corner and is plenty fast. He ran the 40 in 4.38 seconds at the combine. He was a captain for the Huskies. He played in 12 games as a freshman in 2009, starting the last nine at cornerback. He started all 13 games as a sophomore and junior. Last season, he had a string of 45 consecutive starts snapped when he missed the Colorado game with a hamstring injury in November. "It's a perfect place for me," Trufant said. "I want to make an impact in the league from Day 1." - The Sports Xchange

04/28/13 - A closer look at the Falcons' picks: Round 1/22 - Desmond Trufant, CB, 6-0, 190, Washington...He will become the third Trufant to make it to the NFL. His brothers, Marcus (Seattle) and Isaiah (Jets), already are in the league. The youngest Trufant is a big corner and is plenty fast. He ran the 40 in 4.38 seconds at the combine. "I want to make an impact in the league from Day 1." - The Sports Xchange
04/28/13 - The Falcons have special plans for Trufant. With the release of Dunta Robinson and with Brent Grimes leaving to sign with Miami during free agency, the right cornerback position is open. "We expect that he'll come in here and compete and win that position," Falcons coach Mike Smith said. Trufant was asked which NFL players he tries to emulate. "I try to be like two corners, honestly," Trufant said. "One is Darrelle Revis. I like what he does with his technique, patience, strength and confidence. Then there is Charles Woodson because he can go in the slot. He's versatile. I try to model my game after those two players."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "He's a very, very athletic individual. He's very fast. Some had him in the high 4.3s and low 4.4s. He's a legitimate 4.4 guy. He can jump well. He's been very productive with 33 PBUs (pass breakups), a school record. We look for people who can get their hands on balls. Not only for passes broken up but also interceptions, which he did a nice job with as well." -- Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff on cornerback Desmond Trufant. - The Sports Xchange

04/28/13 - Desmond Trufant, the Falcons' first-round draft pick, took some time to reflect on his jersey-number selection. The Tacoma, Wash., native has two brothers in the NFL and knew the significance of taking jersey No. 21 in Atlanta. It was available because Christopher Owens left to sign with Cleveland in free agency, but the number is most closely associated with Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders, who was enshrined in the team's Ring of Honor in 2010. "I thought about it," Trufant said. "That was Deion Sanders' number when he was here. He was a great player. I would just love to follow in a guy's footsteps like that. It's an honor to wear that number and to be here as well." - The Sports Xchange
04/28/13 - Falcons get help for their secondary...The Falcons had a major a hole in their secondary and they tried to fill in by making another first-round trade. Under general manager Thomas Dimitroff, the Falcons have not been shy about going after first-round talent. This time it was a more modest move, sliding up eight spots in the first round to select Washington cornerback Desmond Trufant. They made a trade with the St. Louis Rams to select him. "It's who we had focused on all throughout the offseason," Dimitroff said. "We were very fortunate because it was a very eventful middle of the first round. It was very, very active with a lot of trade discussions."

The Falcons knew they had to get in front of Minnesota to select Trufant. The Vikings had the 23rd and 25th picks. They ended up selecting Florida State cornerback Xavier Rhodes. "He's a very, very athletic individual," Dimitroff said. "He's very fast. Some had him in the high 4.3s and low 4.4s. He's a legitimate 4.4 guy. He can jump well. He's been very productive with 33 PBUs, a school record. We look for people who can get their hands on balls not only for passes broken up but also interceptions, which he did a nice job with as well." - The Sports Xchange

04/28/13 - Falcons coach Mike Smith said that Trufant, who was a team captain for the Huskies, will compete for a starting position. "I'm very excited to have Desmond," Smith said. "He's a guy who seems to find the football. He set a school record there at Washington for passes defensed. He's a very active guy. He comes from a long line of family members that have played in the NFL. His two brothers have both been very successful players. I'm anxious to get him here into Atlanta to meet with you guys."

They gave up a third- and a sixth-round pick and will get a seventh-rounder next season from the Rams. The Falcons had a need at cornerback. Three of the top five cornerbacks from last season are no longer with the team. Brent Grimes (Miami) and Christopher Owens (Cleveland) left during free agency. Dunta Robinson was released and has signed with Kansas City. Trufant, who's 6-0, 190 pounds, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds at the scouting combine. He also has two brothers who play in the NFL. He will become the third Trufant to make it to the NFL. His brothers Marcus (Seattle 2003-12) and Isaiah (Jets, 2010-12) are already in the NFL. "They told me that it's time to grind and try to make a name for myself," Desmond Trufant said. - The Sports Xchange
