08/16/12 - Wide receiver Devon Smith has transferred from Penn State to Marshall. Marshall coach Doc Holliday announced Smith's transfer Thursday. Smith, a senior, will be eligible to play this season because of the NCAA's penalties against Penn State following the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse case. The 5-foot-7, 147-pound Smith caught 25 passes for 402 yards and two touchdowns at Penn State last season. He also returned kicks. Smith is the second former Nittany Lions player to transfer to Marshall, joining junior cornerback Derrick Thomas. - AP Sports
06/21/12 - What had been a pretty terrible spring for Penn State wide receiver Devon Smith has reportely turned into a tougher summer. According to Lions247, Smith has been dismissed from the team. The report says that multiple sources have confirmed the dismissal. Smith missed some time this spring with a foot injury. He was then charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia after his apartment was subjected to a search by Penn State police in March. Whether or not this dismissal is related to the arrest is not known at this time, but Penn State coach Bill O'Brien did say he would "let the legal process play out" before making a decision on Smith. Smith was listed atop the Penn State depth chart at wide receiver earlier this month. He finished the 2011 season third on the team with 25 receptions for 402 yards and 2 touchdowns. - Tom Fornelli, CBS Sports
05/01/12 - At the end of March the apartment of Penn State wide receiver Devon Smith and former Penn State defensive lineman Devin Crawford was subjected to a search by police in which Penn State police seized marijuana and other drug paraphernalia from the apartment. Now Smith has been charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, per a report in the Allentown Morning Call. Penn State receiver Devon Smith has been charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to a university police report. In March, Penn State police seized marijuana and drug paraphernalia from an on-campus apartment at which Smith is listed as a resident. According to the inventory of seized property, police found a "grinder commonly used to cut marijuana leafy matter into smaller particles," ashtrays filled with "blunts" and a digital scale in the apartment. As for Crawford, while he shared the apartment with Smith, he hadn't actually lived in the apartment for months before the search took place. Smith was Penn State's third leading receiver in 2011, finishing the year with 25 receptions for 402 yards and 2 touchdowns. He recently suffered a sprained left foot that caused him to miss the end of Penn State's spring practice. - Tom Fornelli, CBS Sports
