04/17/13 - 2013 NFL DRAFT: 124 FBS PROGRAMS, 124 POSSIBLE UNDRAFTED ROOKIE FREE AGENTS: BOISE STATE: DT Michael Atkinson (6-0, 314, 4.98)...Built low to the ground, Atkinson was able to win with leverage, power and relentlessness before an ACL injury and surgery ended his 2012 season in November. - Dane Brugler,
12/13/12 - 2012 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST FIRST-TEAM (COACHES & MEDIA): DL Mike Atkinson, Sr., Boise State, has been selected First Team All-Mountain West Conference (Coaches & Media selection) for the 2012 college football season. Despite missing the final three games of the regular season, Atkinson, a redshirt senior defensive tackle from Windsor, Ontario, still ranked second amongst Bronco defensive linemen in tackles with 37 (18 solo), including 3.5 for-loss and 1.5 sacks. He started all nine games played, and also intercepted one pass against BYU, returning it 36 yards for the Broncos' winning touchdown. - Boise State football
11/06/12 - The injury news keeps getting worse for Boise State and its highly ranked defense. Coach Chris Petersen confirmed Monday that senior nose tackle Mike Atkinson will miss the rest of the season after tearing an ACL in Saturday's 21-19 loss at home against San Diego State. All season, Atkinson has been one of the on-field leaders and a consistent and disruptive force for a defense that is very young up front. His 37 tackles rank sixth on the team and he has two forced fumbles and one interception return for a touchdown, the only score in Boise State's 7-6 win over BYU back in September. ''I still think we've got a good core of defensive lineman,'' said Petersen. ''You lose a guy for the season whenever it is, that's hard. He's a good tough, true nose tackle, and those guys are hard to find.'' Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe, who has played extensively at tackle this season, is projected to take over at nose tackle, while Darrin Koontz will move into the void at tackle when Boise State (7-2, 4-1) Mountain West plays at Hawaii Saturday. The setback is just the latest blow for a defense already hobbled by medical and disciplinary problems. Starting safety Lee Hightower is on track for missing a third straight game for violating team rules. Petersen did not address the status of Hightower during his regular meeting with reporters Monday. - AP Sports
09/21/12 - Nose tackle Mike Atkinson returned a second-half interception 36 yards for a touchdown and No. 24 Boise State survived a four-quarter rally to beat BYU 7-6 on Thursday night in a game dominated by defense. Boise State (2-1) forced five turnovers and held the Cougars (2-2) to 200 total yards. The Cougars were held scoreless until the final minutes of the game when backup freshman quarterback Taysom Hill scored on a 4-yard run. But with 3:37 remaining, BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall elected to go for the win and the Cougars' first-ever victory over Boise State. But Hill's pass on the run was deflected by a defender and fell incomplete in the end zone. The Broncos, helped by a long kick return, ran out the clock to notch their third straight victory over the Cougars. Boise State's offense wasn't much better, managing just 261 yards. Running back D.J. Harper led the way, rushing for 112 yards on 31 carries. Joe Southwick struggled again, especially on third and fourth downs. Southwick was 15 of 25 for 145 yards. - AP Sports
07/25/12 - 2012 MOUNTAIN WEST PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM (MEDIA): DL Mike Atkinson, R-Sr., Boise State, has been selected First Team Preseason All-Mountain West football for the 2012 college football season as chosen by the Mountain West media. - Boise State football
