08/28/12 - Joe Don Duncan said the news hasn’t quite hit him yet. It probably won’t until that first game arrives and he finds himself on the sidelines without a helmet or pads on. In what Scott Brumfield called the most devastating injury news he has endured as a coach for the Dixie State football program, the Red Storm learned they will be without their All-American tight end for the season. Duncan, a senior with NFL aspirations, said he plans to have surgery within a week to repair damage related to a leg injury suffered four years ago while a freshman at Sacramento State. DSC will have to figure out how to win games without its best player. “You can’t replace a Joe Don,” said Brumfield, set to begin his third year as the Red Storm head coach. “It’s a crushing blow to him and our team.” The announcement tempered the news of the Red Storm naming their starting quarterback for the opener Saturday at Adams State. Griff Robles, a junior who transferred from the University of Utah, gets the nod, edging sophomore Kaleo Nawahine. Robles, however, will not have his top weapon at his disposal. Duncan led all Division II tight ends a year ago with 64 receptions for 949 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging nearly 100 yards receiving per game. Considered speedy for a tight end and with great size (6-foot-4, 270 pounds), Duncan has generated a buzz in NFL circles. And for the past three seasons, he said there was no hint that the fractured femur he suffered would come back to bother him. - David Cordero, The Spectrum
