 Draft Scout Matt Evans News
01/04/13 - University of New Hampshire senior linebacker Matt Evans was selected to participate in the 88th annual East-West Shrine Game, the nation's longest-running all-star college football game, scheduled for Jan. 19 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Opening kickoff is set for 4 p.m., and the game will be televised live on the NFL Network. Since 1925, the East-West Shrine Game has pitted the best college football players from the East and West sides of the United States against one another in an all-star game played to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Evans led the CAA with 126 total tackles, which ranked 19th in the country, and he tacked on a nation-best 87 solo tackles in his final season as a Wildcat. The senior, who became UNH's all-time tackle leader Nov. 3 in a home win against William & Mary, capped his career with 460 stops and 266 solo tackles; both totals ranked first among all FCS players that were active in 2012. - Foster's Daily Democrat

01/03/13 - University of New Hampshire senior linebacker Matt Evans has been selected to participate in the 88th annual East-West Shrine Game, the nation's longest-running all-star college football game, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 19, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Evans, who is from Hanover, Mass., led the CAA with 126 total tackles, which ranked 19th in the country, and he tacked on a nation-best 87 solo tackles in his final season as a Wildcat. The senior, who became UNH's all-time tackle leader Nov. 3 in a home win against William & Mary, capped his illustrious career with 460 stops and 266 solo tackles; both totals ranked first among all FCS players that were active in 2012.

The UNH co-captain was recognized as a Walter Camp Football Foundation All-America for the third time, becoming just the fourth player –and third from UNH (joining ex-Wildcats Ricky Santos and David Ball) to garner that honor three times. The 6-foot, 228-pounder was also feted as an A.P. All-America, AFCA Coaches' All-America, The Sports Network All-America, Beyond Sports Network All-America Second Team, All-CAA First Team and All-New England Team. College Sports Madness recognized the middle linebacker as its CAA Defensive Player of the Year and as an All-America Second-Team performer.

Evans, the 2011 Buck Buchanan Award winner as the national defensive player of the year, closed out the season with six straight double-digit tackle games (seven overall) and led the Wildcats in tackles nine times in 12 games. - New Hampshire football

11/08/12 - Matt Evans is the all-time leader in tackles at the University of New Hampshire, a football program rich in history dating back to its days in the Yankee Conference. He is the reigning Buck Buchanan Award winner, annually presented to the top defensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). There is little about Evans, whether it be a 16-tackle performance against Richmond, or a game-changing stop against another Colonial Athletic Association foe, that is a surprise anymore to UNH coach Sean McDonnell. “It’s hard to explain sometimes when you coach a kid who just has great instincts and an ability to get to the ball,” said McDonnell of the senior linebacker from Hanover. “He just loves the game and plays hard. He’s the best tackler we’ve ever had here. With his 10 tackles in a 28-25 CAA win over William & Mary Saturday afternoon, the 6-foot, 225-pound Evans surged past 1981 grad Steve Doig as the program’s career leader in stops with 437. A model of consistency over the past three years, the Thayer Academy graduate has racked up 103 tackles this season — including an FCS-high 69 solo stops — for the 11th-ranked Wildcats (8-2), who have won five straight games. He is tied for the team lead with three sacks and has a team-high 8.5 tackles for loss. Just as Evans has overcome his lack of size to thrive at the college level, he hopes to take a shot at the National Football League after his stellar career at UNH is over. Pro scouts have been in Durham to look at a number of players, including Evans. He could emerge as a late-round draft choice, or be given a shot by an NFL team as a free agent. “That’s probably the best shot I have is going the free agent route,” he said. “To catch on with an NFL team, if that happened, would be a dream come true.’’ - John Johnson, Boston.com
10/26/12 - Eastern Illinois wide receiver Erik Lora and New Hampshire linebacker Matt Evans are closing in on some impressive records with only four weeks remaining in the 2012 season. Evans, the 2011 Buck Buchanan Award winner and a first-team All-America selection, needs at least 20 tackles in the team's last three games to overtake Steve Doig (1978-81) as the all-time leader in UNH history. Evans is the FCS' current active leader with 415 career tackles. He also is the active leader in solo tackles (235) for a career. No. 12 UNH visits Rhode Island on Saturday. - Sports Network
07/25/12 - 2012 PRESEASON ALL-CAA FOOTBALL TEAM (COACHES): Linebacker Matt Evans, Senior, New Hampshire, has been selected First Team Preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association football for the 2012 college football season as chosen by the CAA head football coaches. Evans, the reigning Buck Buchanan Award winner as the 2011 FCS national defensive player of the year, earned All-CAA First Team honors last season after being selected as a member of the Preseason All-Conference Team. The Hanover, Mass., native, who enters this season with 334 career tackles, the fifth most in UNH history and just 100 shy of all-time leader Steve Doig (1978-81), was tabbed to the All-CAA Second Team during his 2010 sophomore campaign. In 2011, Evans led the country with 7.67 solo tackles/game and ranked second nationally with 165 total stops, the second most in UNH single-season history. He tallied 10 double-digit tackle performances, notched three interceptions – two of which he returned for touchdowns as part of his 102 INT-return yards – paced the Wildcats with three forced fumbles and ranked second on the squad with 7.5 tackles for loss. - New Hampshire football
