04/17/13 - 2013 Azusa Pacific Pro Day: Hall of Fame OT Jackie Slater runs Azusa Pacific workouts...Azusa Pacific had its pro day on April 11. Workouts were held outdoors on FieldTurf. Fifteen teams sent representatives to watch eight participants. Offensive line coaches from the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers were there and 2001 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Jackie Slater ran the drills.
Luke Marquardt, OL (6-foot-8 3/8, 317 pounds) - He has an interesting story. He never played high school football but instead played basketball. He did position drills but has a hairline fracture in his right foot. He’s going to have surgery on April 18. He’s one of those dark horse candidates, but how his medical condition will affect him, no one knows. - Gil Brandt, NFL.com
04/12/13 - Tackles Lane Johnson and Terron Armstead may have stolen the show from an athletic standpoint at the 2013 NFL combine, but in terms of the wow-factor "on the hoof," no one turned more heads than Azusa-Pacific's Luke Marquardt, a 6-8 (1/2), 315-pounder whose athleticism convinced more than half of the league to send scouts to the west coast Thursday for a late workout.
With Alabama running back Eddie Lacy staging his own late workout and teams generally loathe to send their scouts out this late in the process, the fact that an estimated 16-18 teams showed up for the Azusa-Pacific Pro Day is a statement, in itself. After all, the last player from Azusa-Pacific drafted into the NFL was notable Kansas City Chiefs' running back Christian Okoye... in 1987.
NFLDraftScout.com has learned that offensive line coaches from the Denver Broncos, San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers were in attendance for the workout, which saw Marquardt run through drills as a left tackle, right tackle and guard. Hall of Fame offensive tackle Jackie Slater, now Azusa-Pacific's offensive line coach put Marquardt through drills.
Marquardt turned heads in Indianapolis due to a sculpted frame but wasn't able to work out in Indianapolis due to a broken foot suffered during his senior campaign. He didn't run timed drills Thursday but did impress during positional workouts and NFLDraftScout.com has confirmed that he has at least eight private workouts and/or visits scheduled. Among those were stops he's already had with the Carolina Panthers and 49ers.
Marquardt is currently viewed as a potential Day Three selection and is NFLDraftScout.com's No. 24 rated offensive tackle, overall. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com
