  TSX Player News Log
01/01/14 - Risers-Fallers from early bowl games...In the Louisville Cardinals' impressive victory over the Miami Hurricanes in the Russell Athletic Bowl, it was hard not to get distracted by Teddy Bridgewater's brilliance. Former quarterback Marcus Smith was nearly as impressive on the defensive side of the ball for the Cardinals, however, demonstrating the fluidity and power to intrigue scouts working for 4-3 and 3-4 defenses, alike. The All-American showed off the traits to earn a significantly higher grade than the 5th round projection NFLDraftScout.com currently has for him -- if he continues his impressive final campaign with an impressive performance at the Senior Bowl. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com
12/16/13 - 2013 ALL-AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DL Marcus Smith, Louisville, Sr., 6-3 252, Columbus, Ga./Hardaway,...Smith, a first-team honoree, led the league decisively in total sacks in conference play with 10.5 and sacks per game at 1.31. The Columbus, Ga., native currently ranks seventh on the school's charts with 12.5 sacks overall and needs just half a sack to tie for fifth most in a season. Smith is second in the league in tackles for loss per game both overall (11.5) and per game (1.44). Smith also forced three fumbles and blocked a kick. - Louisville football
12/13/13 - 2013 WALTER CAMP SECOND TEAM ALL-AMERICAN: DL Marcus Smith, Louisville, 6-3 252, Sr., Columbus, GA...Smith, who was named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday, continued to pile up the awards as the he was tabbed a Walter Camp second team All-American on Thursday. The 6-foot-3, 260-pounder also accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl on Jan. 25, 2014 in Mobile, Ala. He is the first Cardinal player to participate in the all-star game since Billal Powell was selected in 2010. Named a second-team All-American by USA Today on Wednesday, Smith is one of the most decorated UofL players since Elvis Dumervil was named on numerous teams All-American squads in 2005.

Smith, also a first-team all-conference honoree, ranks second nationally in sacks at 1.0 per game. Starting all 12 games at defensive end, Smith registered 39 total tackles and recorded a team-high 16 quarterback hurries. He totaled a career-high three sacks in a 24-10 win over Rutgers and also had 2.5 sacks versus Connecticut. - Louisville football

12/11/13 - 2013 AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR (COACHES): Marcus Smith, DE, Louisville (Sr., Columbus, Ga.)...Smith was named American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year for his performance on one of the nation's most effective defenses. Smith registered 12.5 sacks, 15.5 tackles for loss, had three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in the regular season, pacing a defense that allowed just 257.9 yards (second nationally) and 12.4 points per game (third nationally). He ranked second among all FBS players in sacks and was 17th nationally in tackles for loss. - American Athletic Conference football
12/06/13 - 2013 TED HENDRICKS AWARD FINALIST: MARCUS SMITH - LOUISVILLE 63 252 lbs SR...The defensive end position seems to be a good fit for Marcus Smith. The senior came to the University of Louisville three years ago as a quarterback, switched to linebacker for his freshman season, and finally settled on defensive end just two years ago. His FBS-leading 1.1 sacks per game this season are proof that he made the correct decision. The Cardinals defense currently ranks second in FBS yards allowed, first in sacks and third in points allowed. Smith leads all FBS defensive linemen with 12.5 Sacks. He also has 11 QB Pressures, three Forced Fumbles and a Blocked Kick this season. - The Ted Hendricks Foundation
11/11/13 - WEEK 11 AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE HONOR ROLL: Marcus Smith, Sr., DE, Louisville, Columbus, Ga.,...Had seven tackles, 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble in a 31-10 win at UConn. National leader in sacks (8.0). - American Athletic Conference football
10/07/13 - WEEK 6 AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE WEEKLY HONOR ROLL: Marcus Smith, Sr., DE, Louisville, Columbus, Ga.,...Had five tackles, including three tackles for loss, with a sack, a fumble recovery and a blocked field goal attempt in a 30-7 win at Temple. - American Athletic football
08/11/13 - TOP LOUISVILLE PROSPECTS FOR THE 2014 NFL DRAFT: 5. DE Marcus Smith (6-3, 252, 4.77)...A former quarterback and then linebacker, Smith made the move to defensive end in 2011 and posted a team-leading 5.5 sacks that year, followed by a junior campaign in '12 where he racked up another four, and led the team with seven tackles for loss. He's proven to be versatile in the process, rushing as a stand-up linebacker, a down defensive end, and even from the interior D-line in nickel situations. His first step off the snap is explosive, and he does a good job of getting his arms extended to create space. He possesses surprising drive-power on contact, often pushing back far bigger opponents, and collapsing the pocket with a bull rush.

Off the edge, while he lacks a repertoire of moves to routinely clear the corner, his speed and natural explosiveness are apparent and should continue to provide him opportunities to disrupt. While he's known mostly for his pass-rush, he's surprisingly instinctive against the run as well and has shown a knack for penetrating and bottling the runner. Smith is raw and still relatively new to the defensive side of the football, and could certainly draw interest from NFL teams in need of versatile situational edge-rushers, if he can continue to show improvement. - Derek Stephens, NFLDraftScout.com
