Sam Shields TSX Player News Log
09/26/16 - CB Sam Shields missed a second straight game Sunday because of a concussion. As a veteran player with a history of concussions, Shields' status will be up in the air when the Packers return next week from their bye week. Quinten Rollins started in Shields' spot Sunday against Detroit.
09/25/16 - CB Sam Shields (concussion), S Morgan Burnett (groin), OLB Clay Matthews (ankle/hamstring), OLB Datone Jones (knee) and DT Letroy Guion (knee) were inactive Sunday against Detroit.
09/22/16 - CB Sam Shields remained in the concussion protocol Thursday, increasing the likelihood the veteran starter will have to miss a second straight game Sunday (1 p.m. ET) against the Detroit Lions. If Shields isn't cleared by the weekend, Green Bay will again depend on a young cornerback trio of Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins and LaDarius Gunter.
09/21/16 - CB Sam Shields still hasn't been cleared to return to the field. The veteran starter has been sidelined since he suffered a concussion toward the end of the season-opening win at the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 11. The Packers had to make do with the young trio of Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins and LaDarius Gunter in the Sunday night loss at Minnesota.
09/19/16 - CB Sam Shields didn't play the loss at Minnesota on Sunday because of a concussion. McCarthy said Shields was put through a workout Monday, but it's unclear whether the veteran starter will be cleared later in the week to have a shot to resume playing next Sunday against the Detroit Lions. The Packers were left with Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins and LaDarius Gunter as their true cornerbacks in Sunday's game. Randall struggled greatly in coverage against Stefon Diggs, who had a career-high nine catches for 182 yards and a touchdown.
09/15/16 - CB Sam Shields missed another day of practice Thursday as he continues to recover from a concussion that the veteran starter suffered near the end of the season-opening victory at Jacksonville last Sunday. "Nothing's changed since yesterday," head coach Mike McCarthy said before Thursday's practice. If Shields isn't cleared to play Green Bay's prime-time matchup against rival Minnesota in the Vikings' first regular-season game at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday night, the Packers would be left with the young trio of Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins and LaDarius Gunter at cornerback.
09/14/16 - CB Sam Shields didn't practice Wednesday as he continues to be monitored for a concussion sustained late in the 27-23, season-opening win at the Jacksonville Jaguars last Sunday. That leaves a big question mark for the veteran starter's availability in the Week 2 game at the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night. If Shields can't play, the Packers would be left with the second-year trio of Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins and LaDarius Gunter as their top three cornerbacks.
09/12/16 - CB Sam Shields was being evaluated for a concussion Monday, a day after he left the season-opening 27-23 win at the Jacksonville Jaguars late in the game. Shields was taken to the locker room after he was shaken up on a tackle of T.J. Yeldon on a run play in the closing minutes. Head coach Mike McCarthy said his veteran starter will continue to be monitored day by day this week, so more on Shields' status for the Sunday night game at the Minnesota Vikings won't be known until later in the week.
09/11/16 - CB Sam Shields left the game with an undisclosed injury late in the fourth quarter and did not return.
06/02/16 - CB Sam Shields was on the field with his teammates for the entire OTA session Thursday. The team's top cornerback was absent for the first open workout during OTAs, which are voluntary, on May 24.
