01/18/16 - CB Sam Shields returned to action and made the start in the overtime loss at Arizona on Saturday night. Shields missed the previous four games, including the opening-round playoff win at the Washington Redskins, because of a concussion. Shields had two of the Packers' six pass breakups against the Cardinals, but the veteran standout also dropped what could have been as many as three interceptions of passes thrown by Carson Palmer.
01/15/16 - CB Sam Shields (concussion) had limited participation in practice Thursday for the second straight day. The veteran starter has missed the last four games because of the head injury. Head coach Mike McCarthy expressed optimism before Thursday's practice that Shields could finally be cleared medically to play Saturday night in the divisional playoff at Arizona. "The work today will obviously, hopefully, complete the (league-mandated) protocol," McCarthy said. "I hope today is the point that he completes the protocol."
01/13/16 - CB Sam Shields (concussion) participated in practice Wednesday, the team's first on-field work of its shortened week between playoff games. Head coach Mike McCarthy said before practice that Shields remained in the NFL-mandated protocol for players with head injuries, but his heavy involvement in team segments during the jog-through at the start of practice is encouraging.
01/11/16 - CB Sam Shields (concussion) missed a fourth straight game Sunday, when Green Bay rolled to a 17-point win at Washington in the wild-card round of the playoffs. The status of Shields, the team's top cornerback, for the divisional-round matchup with the Cardinals in Arizona on Saturday night won't be known until later in the week.
01/08/16 - CB Sam Shields was listed as doubtful for Sunday's NFC wild-card against the Washington Redskins due to the concussion he suffered on Dec. 13. Shields missed the final three regular-season games due to the injury and the club was hopeful he'd be back for its first playoff game. But he remains in the NFL concussion protocol and needs to clear that first.
01/07/16 - CB Sam Shields (concussion) hasn't been able to practice this week and would seem to be in jeopardy of missing a fourth straight game Sunday, when the Packers play the host Redskins in the first round of the playoffs. Head coach Mike McCarthy said Thursday that Shields, the team's top cornerback, remains in the NFL-mandated protocol for players with head injuries. "It's obviously a process," McCarthy said. "Everybody's injury is different, especially when we're dealing with concussions." Without Shields, the Packers would be left to go with rookies Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins as well as slot back Casey Hayward to defend Washington's talented and speedy core group of receivers.
01/06/16 - CB Sam Shields (concussion) remains in the league-mandated protocol and didn't practice Wednesday. Shields has missed the last three games, and the team's top cornerback could be in jeopardy of not being available for Sunday's wild-card matchup with Washington.
01/04/16 - CB Sam Shields (concussion) missed a third straight game Sunday night, when the Packers ended the regular season with a 20-13 loss to the visiting Minnesota Vikings. Green Bay starts the playoffs Sunday with a wild-card game at the Washington Redskins. The status of Shields, the team's top cornerback, for the game won't be known until later in the week.
01/02/16 - CB Sam Shields (concussion) has been downgraded for Sunday night's clash with the Minnesota Vikings, the team announced Saturday. The change in status leaves Shields in danger of missing his third consecutive game.
12/31/15 - CB Sam Shields (concussion) practiced on a limited basis Thursday for the second straight day. Head coach Mike McCarthy said before Thursday's practice that Shields was "in the back end" of the NFL-mandated protocol for players who have head injuries. Shields, the team's top cornerback, has missed the last two games. His availability for Sunday night's regular-season finale against the Minnesota Vikings with the NFC North title up for grabs won't be known until the weekend.
