Sam Shields TSX Player News Log
10/23/14 - CB Sam Shields has yet to practice this week, raising the likelihood he will miss a second straight game because of a strained left knee when the Packers play at the New Orleans Saints on Sunday night. Head coach Mike McCarthy didn't provide an update on Shields' status after practice Thursday. Green Bay doesn't practice Friday, when the final injury report is released, and the team will have a walk-through session on the field Saturday before departing for New Orleans. If Shields isn't cleared by the weekend, Davon House is the top candidate to make another start in Shields' absence opposite Tramon Williams.
10/22/14 - CB Sam Shields wasn't cleared to practice Wednesday and remains a big question mark for playing Sunday night at the New Orleans Saints. Head coach Mike McCarthy left the door open Wednesday for the team's top cover man to play. Shields is dealing with a strained left knee that kept from playing the blowout win over the Carolina Panthers last Sunday. If Shields is out again this weekend, Davon House is expected to continue manning the starting spot at right cornerback.
10/20/14 - CB Sam Shields was deactivated for Sunday's game against Carolina. Shields, the team's top cornerback, strained his left knee in the previous game. It is uncertain whether Shields will be healthy enough to return for the prime-time game against the Saints on Sunday.
10/16/14 - CB Sam Shields has yet to practice this week, raising doubt about his availability for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers because of an injury sustained to his left knee in the last game. Head coach Mike McCarthy didn't provide much of an update on Shields after practice Thursday, other than to indicate Shields is behind fellow injured cornerback Tramon Williams in their recovery this week.
10/15/14 - CB Sam Shields didn't practice Wednesday, when the team reconvened on the field for the first time since the 27-24 comeback win at the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Shields suffered an unspecified injury to his left knee in the third quarter and didn't finish the game. Shields hasn't been ruled out from playing this Sunday against the Carolina Panthers, but a scenario in which he would be available likely will hinge on whether he can participate in practice Thursday.
10/14/14 - CB Sam Shields suffered an injury to his left knee in the third quarter of the 27-24 win at the Miami Dolphins on Sunday and didn't return to the game. Though not considered a long-term injury, the Packers won't have more information on the prognosis for Shields, the team's top cornerback, until Wednesday. Shields had his team-leading second interception earlier in Sunday's game.
10/12/14 - CB Sam Shields intercepted a pass in the second quarter, but left the game in the third with a knee injury before a Dolphins drive began. Shields said his knee just gave out, but nothing is torn. He was walking with a noticeable limp after the game, but said, "I'm alright."
03/10/14 - CB Sam Shields agreed to a four-year contract on Saturday keeping him away from unrestricted free agency. According to ESPN, the $39 million deal includes a signing bonus of $12.5 million and pays out $30 million in the first three years: $15 million in the first season, $6 million in the second and $9 million in the third. Shields' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed the news on Twitter: "Congrats to RSR client Sam Shields & the Green Bay Packers on the new contract!" Shields had a breakout season after playing for a restricted free-agent tender of $2.023 million in 2013. He finished with a career-high four interceptions and had 61 tackles in 14 games.
01/07/14 - CB Sam Shields suffered a game-ending injury to his left knee on the second play of San Francisco's first series in the 49ers' 23-20 win in the first round of the playoffs Sunday. Multiple reports Monday indicated Shields suffered a bone bruise in the knee when he collided with linebacker Andy Mulumba at the end of a pass play.
