04/28/13 - A closer look at the Lions' picks: Round 4/132 - Devin Taylor, DE, 6-7, 276, South Carolina...The love affair with the SEC continues. Taylor is a developmental player with freakish athleticism. He is 6-7, 266 pounds, with 4.72 speed and a 36-inch arm span. 04/08/13 - 2013 South Carolina Pro Day: There were 32 NFL teams represented at South Carolina Pro Day on March 27. Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis was among the coaches who attended. A total of 18 players worked out on field-turf outdoors in 50 degree weather with 5 mph wind. Devin Taylor DE (6-7 ¼, 273 pounds) –- He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.87 seconds and recorded 16 strength lifts. They worked him out as both a defensive end with his hand on the ground and a guy that plays in space. If the light ever goes on and Taylor realizes how good he can be, somebody will get a really good player. - Gil Brandt, NFL.com
01/01/13 - Scouting the South Carolina pass defense: The South Carolina front four has made life miserable for quarterbacks throughout the season. DEs Jadeveon Clowney, Devin Taylor and Chaz Sutton have been the reason the Gamecocks have amassed 40 sacks. Clowney, an All-American, has led the way with a school-record 13 sacks. Due to the play of the front, the team has not relied on blitzes, which has allowed the team to drop seven into pass defense. Opponents are averaging 193.2 yards game through the air. - The Sports Xchange
09/25/12 - 09/24/12 NFL DRAFT SCOUT FALLER: DE DEVIN TAYLOR, SOUTH CAROLINA...After a breakout sophomore campaign with 7.5 sacks in 2010, Gamecocks defensive end Devin Taylor has failed to live up to the hype as a future first round pick. Now a senior, he is still searching for his first sack of the 2012 season through four games. Playing opposite Jadeveon Clowney, Taylor should thrive with offenses game-planning against limiting the sophomore sensation, but so far, he has struggled to beat single blockers and does not even rank in the top-10 on the team in total tackles. He has the imposing height and length that the NFL loves for the position with the motor to fight through the whistle, but is lean-muscled and lacks the bulk or overall strength to defeat blocks or work through the trash. Taylor has stiff hips, which limits his fluidity and burst to the play, and is more of a one-speed long-striding athlete, struggling to show explosion off the snap. He will drop in coverage at times, but there are large question marks about his ability to hold up in space in the NFL because of his suspect redirection skills. While he still has two-thirds of his senior season left to improve his draft stock, Taylor is not off to a great start. - Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.com
09/22/12 - Five Prospects I'll Be Watching Saturday: Devin Taylor, DE, South Carolina: At a chiseled 6-7, 267 pounds, it is easy to understand why many believe that Taylor is the next South Carolina defender to warrant early round consideration by NFL teams. He's earned recognition from SEC coaches after each of the past three seasons and his presence allowed Steve Spurrier and his defensive staff the flexibility of moving Melvin Ingram around a season ago to create mismatches for the eventual first round pick of the San Diego Chargers. Taylor registered 42 tackles a season ago, including 8.5 tackles for loss and six sacks. While there are some who believe his numbers are certain to improve this season, I have concerns about his ability to transition to the NFL. Taylor, while explosive off the snap and a high-effort player, lacks the flexibility preferred in pass rushers. Too often, he'll rush upfield but be unable to adjust as mobile ball-carriers squirt past him. This is precisely what I anticipate Missouri's athletic quarterback James Franklin may be able to do againt Taylor (though not necessarily against USC's Jadeveon Clowney) I agree with Gary Danielson, who will be calling this game with Verne Lundquist, that the winner of the pass rush battle between South Carolina and Missouri will win this key SEC showdown. This game begins at 3:30 pm eastern and will be televised by CBS. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com
08/27/12 - Top-five South Carolina prospects for the 2013 NFL Draft: 2. DE Devin Taylor...The San Diego Chargers made Melvin Ingram the No. 18 overall selection of the 2012 draft despite the fact that at South Carolina last season Ingram often was asked to move from his customary defensive end position inside to defensive tackle to allow Taylor and super freshman Jadeveon Clowney to remain outside. That says a little something about the talent level each of the returning Gamecocks' pass rushers possess. Taylor has proven to be a standout throughout his career at South Carolina. After redshirting in 2008, he immediately was thrown into the mix as a key part of the Gamecocks' rotation along the defensive line and registered 28 tackles, including 5.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. His best season to date came in 2010 when he led the Gamecocks with 13 tackles for loss, finished second on the club in sacks (7.5), led the team's defensive linemen with 46 overall stops, earning First Team All-SEC accolades from the media. The coaches "only" gave him Second Team honors, however, and Taylor wasn't able to prove his doubters wrong a year later. While his numbers were respectable last season (42 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, six sacks), frankly it was a disappointing year for him as the Gamecocks saw Ingram and Clowney each surge past him as the clear top defensive linemen on the team. Taylor is going to be an interesting grade for NFL clubs due to the fact that he offers a unique combination of size and overall athleticism. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com
08/27/12 - Top-five South Carolina prospects for the 2013 NFL Draft: 2. DE Devin Taylor...He shows an explosive burst off the snap and is a naturally smooth accelerator. Unfortunately, due to his high-cut frame, he's also stiff, struggling with the flexibility necessary to turn the corner efficiently when he does cross the line. His terrific speed allows him to chase down ball-carriers and make flashy plays but too often Taylor is eluded in short spaces. The fact that Taylor plays a physical brand of football and has such long, powerful arms, however, help him make tackles when, frankly, the rest of his body remains in poor position to do so. With Clowney operating at the RDE position, Taylor should be able to feast upon the generally slower-footed right tackles and enjoy a nice statline this season. He certainly looks the part but he could prove more of a second or third round prospect come April than the top 10 prospect that his success as a prospective three year standout in the SEC would seemingly warrant. At this point Taylor ranks as NFLDraftScout.com's No. 8 defensive end for the 2013 NFL draft. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com
08/01/12 - 2012 PRESEASON TED HENDRICKS AWARD WATCH LIST: DEVIN TAYLOR, SOUTH CAROLINA, has been selected a preseason candidate for the 2012 Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award. On-field performance, exceptional winning attitude, leadership abilities, contributions to school and community and academic preparedness are some of the criteria used to determine the Award’s winner. Taylor, a 6-8, 267-pound senior from Beaufort, S.C., was previously named to the Bronko Nagurski, the Bednarik and the Lombardi watch lists. - South Carolina football
07/21/12 - 2012 PRESEASON ALL-SEC SECOND TEAM (MEDIA): DL Devin Taylor (26), South Carolina, Sr.,...has been selected second team All-SEC for the 2012 college football season as selected by the SEC media. - South Carolina football
07/21/12 - 2012 PRESEASON ALL-SEC SECOND TEAM (COACHES): DL - Devin Taylor, South Carolina...The University of South Carolina football team was represented by eight players on the 2012 Coaches Preseason All-SEC teams. The Gamecocks had two players receive first-team recognition, four players earn spots on the second team and two players make the preseason All-SEC third team. - South Carolina football
