06/08/16 - G/C Manny Ramirez was placed on the reserve/retired list. Ramirez played in 83 games with 65 starts over eight seasons for the Lions and Broncos. The move means the Bears may need to look for another experienced free agent who can be a backup to Hroniss Grasu.
03/30/16 - G Manny Ramirez, who became an unrestricted free agent with the Lions March 9, was signed by the Bears Wednesday (March 30) and will be reunited with his former head coach and position coach.
The 33-year-old Ramirez spent four seasons in Denver with head coach John Fox and offensive line coach Dave Magazu, who are now with the Bears. Ramirez was traded in April 2015 from the Broncos to the Lions in a draft-day deal.
Last season, Ramirez started seven games and played in all 16 for the Lions, bringing his career total to 65 regular-season starts overall since he was drafted in the fourth round by Detroit in 2007.
Ramirez can play both guard and center. He could compete with second-year player Hroniss Grasu for the starting center position this year or provide depth if he does not land a starting spot.
05/01/15 - C/G Manny Ramirez was traded by the Broncos to the Lions Thursday (April 30) during the draft. The Broncos moved up to the Lions' spot in the first round and also sent Ramirez and two fifth-round picks for Detroit's pick. The No. 5 picks are this year and in 2016.
12/24/14 - RG Manny Ramirez sat out Wednesday's practice because of an illness, as a bug continues to work its way through the Broncos' locker room. Ben Garland filled in for him.
11/10/14 - OL Manny Ramirez started at right guard for the first time since the 2012 season. Ramirez had worked at center in 2013 and 2014 prior to the shuffling of the offensive line. Ramirez started 11 games for the Broncos at right guard in place of Chris Kuper in 2012.
01/13/14 - C Manny Ramirez had one of his best games of the season during Sunday's win, helping Knowshon Moreno and Montee Ball combine for 134 yards on 33 carries, most of which came up the middle.
09/03/13 - C Manny Ramirez will pivot the offensive line after holding off a host of challengers for the job. The Broncos signed ex-Colt and Chief Ryan Lilja to push for playing time, but he struggled in his attempted comeback, dealing with knee soreness and a loss of weight that left him vulnerable at the point of attack.
09/01/13 - C Manny Ramirez will pivot the offensive line after holding off a host of challengers for the job. The Broncos signed ex-Colt and Chief Ryan Lilja to push for playing time, but he struggled in his attempted comeback, dealing with knee soreness and a loss of weight that left him vulnerable at the point of attack.
07/31/13 - C Manny Ramirez, who worked as the first-team center throughout organized team activities and minicamp this offseason, is there again after Dan Koppen was lost for the season because of a knee injury. At the time, the Broncos expected that he would hold down the spot until J.D. Walton's return. They thought Walton would be ready for training camp, but his recovery hit a snag, and his only appearances at training camp have been on the sideline, with his ankle and foot in a boot and supported by a rolling crutch caddy that allows him to get around.
Although Ramirez worked as the first-team center during training camp, he has never started an NFL game at the position.
"It has a little different technique and a little different balance in your sets and all that, but ita's something that I've always been as a backup even throughout high school and college, to the beginning of my career," Ramirez said. "So it's just something I have to do more often now."
But he'll have to do it at the highest possible level when it comes to the cerebral aspects of the game. Peyton Manning provides more challenges in terms of checks and calls for a center than most quarterbacks, so Ramirez will have to study and absorb fast. During their work together July 29, there was a fumbled snap when Manning was under center, but no other major issues otherwise.
"I think we have a pretty good understanding (of each other)," Ramirez said. "We communicate; as you all know, he loves to communicate a lot."
01/11/13 - G Manny Ramirez will head back to the bench this week unless Chris Kuper has an unexpected setback. Ramirez started 11 of 16 games for the injured Kuper in the regular season, but was credited with 6.5 sacks allowed according to Stats, Inc., the most permitted by any Denver offensive lineman.
