Draft Scout Snapshot: A closer look at the Steelers' picks: Round 3/79 - Markus Wheaton, WR, 5-11, 182, Oregon State...Another big need filled by the Steelers with a speed receiver to take the roster spot of departed Mike Wallace. Ran 4.5 at the combine but the Steelers consider him much faster, quicker. Holds the Beavers record with 227 receptions. Emmanuel Sanders will likely leave as a free agent in 2014. - The Sports Xchange

Markus Wheaton TSX Player News Log
05/23/13 - The Pittsburgh Steelers have four of their nine draft picks under contract after signing third-round pick wide receiver Markus Wheaton and fifth-round pick cornerback Terry Hawthorne. Financial terms of the four-year deals were not disclosed. The Steelers needed a speed receiver to take the roster spot of departed Mike Wallace. Wheaton ran the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds at the combine but the Steelers consider him much faster, quicker. He holds the Beavers' record with 227 career receptions. Emmanuel Sanders will likely leave as a free agent in 2014, so the Steelers envision Wheaton as a long-term starter.
04/28/13 - A closer look at the Steelers' picks: Round 3/79 - Markus Wheaton, WR, 5-11, 182, Oregon State...Another big need filled by the Steelers with a speed receiver to take the roster spot of departed Mike Wallace. Ran 4.5 at the combine but the Steelers consider him much faster, quicker. Holds the Beavers record with 227 receptions. Emmanuel Sanders will likely leave as a free agent in 2014. - The Sports Xchange
04/28/13 - Wide receiver Markus Wheaton of Oregon State, the Steelers' third-round pick, ran just 4.55 at the combine, but the Steelers consider him faster than that. "He's a good, solid football player who brings speed to the team," offensive coordinator Todd Haley said. "He is a fast guy, make no mistake about it, he can stretch the field." - The Sports Xchange
03/24/13 - 2013 Oregon State Pro Day: Oregon State University’s pro day work out was held on Friday indoors on FieldTurf. It featured 17 teams with 11 OSU players. No NFL head coaches were in attendance. Markus Wheaton, WR, (5-foot-11 1/8, 186 pounds) - Did wide receiver drills. He caught the ball very well, but he had some trouble tracking the ball overhead on long throws. - Gil Brandt, NFL.com
03/16/13 - 2013 Oregon State Pro Day: Wheaton decided to rest on all his numbers from the combine. At Lucas Oil Stadium last month, he recorded top times in the 40-yard dash (4.45), vertical jump (37-inches), short shuttle (4.02), long shuttle (11.16) and bench press (20 reps). Both Poyer and Wheaton looked good during their positional drills with one scout saying “neither did much to help or hurt themselves today.” - Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.com
01/24/13 - 2013 Senior Bowl, Wide Receivers, Three up...2. Markus Wheaton, Oregon State. This is probably the North team's best receiver. He has very good speed (second fastest on this team) and can run routes well, two traits that especially stood out during practices. There was a play Monday where he made a pretty over-the-shoulder catch and another where he adjusted his body to an underthrown ball, making his quarterbacks look a little better on each play. He is also a willing blocker as he got noticed in drills Wednesday. The all-time leading receiver at Oregon State doesn't have huge size but the 5-11, 183-pound speedster should develop into an effective weapon at the next level. - Dave Richard, CBSSports.com
01/24/13 - 2013 SENIOR BOWL, WEDNESDAY RISER: WR Markus Wheaton, Oregon State (North Team)...If a prospect is drawing comparisons to Steelers' speedy wide receiver Mike Wallace, then he had better be fast. And Wheaton is, running around and past defensive backs throughout practices this week. The Beavers' leading receiver had a productive senior season and is carrying that momentum over to Mobile where he has looked like the top wideout on the North team. Wheaton tends to play too fast at times in his routes, but when controlled, he has the sudden moves and athleticism to create and make smooth adjustments to the ball. - Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.com
12/29/12 - WR Markus Wheaton added 12 catches in the season finale to set a new OSU record with 224 receptions in his career. The previous mark was 222 by James Rodgers, who concluded his career last year. Wheaton also goes into the bowl game with a streak of at least one reception in 35 consecutive games. - The Sports Xchange
12/29/12 - PLAYERS TO WATCH: WR Markus Wheaton already has the school career record for receptions with 224, and he enters the bowl game with 88 receptions this season, three off the OSU record of 91 set by James Rodgers in 2009. Wheaton is also one behind the OSU record for receiving touchdowns in a season, held by James Newson with 12 in 2002. Wheaton's 1,207 receiving yards this season rank sixth on the OSU all-time list, and he's only 99 yards from third place. If all that isn't enough, Wheaton averaged 9.7 yards on his 16 rushing plays this season. - The Sports Xchange
12/03/12 - WR Markus Wheaton added 12 catches in the season finale to set a new OSU record with 224 receptions in his career.
