Ovie Oghoufo

OLB, DE · LSU

UPDATES

Week 3: in 41-14 mauling of Mississippi, LSU was missing two defensive starters and that is not counting Oghoufo, who doesn't show up in final stats. We will check the video.

Week 2:  In 72-10 win over Grambling, Oghoufo was in on only 28 snaps, 5 in pass coverage where he batted down one ball. He is also dinged for missing one tackle.

Week 1: in 42-24 loss to Against Florida State, Oghoufo was in on 43 plays, contributed three tackles and a hurry. He was in pass coverage 9 times but was never targeted.

Week 0: DNP

OVERVIEW

As his career path shows in college, Oghoufo is persistent. He is good enough as an OLB/DE to get drafted in about the third round, but his lack of speed may prevent him from being a star at the next level.

Oghoufo is a sixth-season senior began college at Notre Dame in 2018. Arrived at LSU in January, 2023 after 20 starts with Texas.

ANALYSIS

Strengths:

Good, not great, first step and agility off snap from the upright stance and good out of 3- point stance. Shows an array of moves to keep offensive linemen guessing. Fluid, smooth and in control, Oghoufo plays off of excellent contact balance allowing him to move around and under blocks. Uses good angles in pursuit, maintains excellent leverage, and is dependable with limited coverage responsibilities in short zone and man covering on a back out of the backfield.

In pass rush, he uses versatility to select best way to handle each blocker. He can attack and spin or use arm under and his agility makes him hard to stay blocked. Adapts to his blocker and will attack with a move that gives him the best chance to the QB. He maintains awareness in zone coverage, keeping range with the receiver as well as run plays where he finds ways to jam a play.

Weaknesses:

Lacks quickness and explosion of a twitchy athlete and blockers can adjust faster than he can take advantage if he does get an edge. Fair foot speed diminishes his lateral movement which prevents him from closing many plays. This is why he may be best deployed just setting the edge. That same lack of quicks inhibits his ability to cover receivers with speed and is in danger of getting singled up in a mismatch in man coverage.

Vagabond stats:

Texas: 2022 13 GP, 53 Total Tackles, 19 Solo,  34 Assists, 7.5 TFL, 1.5 Sacks

Texas: 2021 12 GP, 42 Total Tackles, 21 Solo, 21 Assists, 5.5 TFL, 2 Sacks

ND 2020       11 GP, 10 Total Tackles, 7 Solo, 3 Assists, 1.5 TFL, 1.5 Sacks

ND 2019       8 GP, 12 Total Tackles, 1 Solo, 11 Assists, 1 TFL, 1 Sack

ND 2018       Redshirt

FRANKLY: If passion and persistence were more meaningful, Oghoufo would be hell to deal with. But the NFL has superior athletes who also have passion and persistence. He knows what do to, but cannot always do it. Future coach?
