Myles Jack

OLB, ILB/FB · UCLA
Jack was an All-America candidate before suffering a torn meniscus during practice last September. He underwent surgery and ultimately decided to withdraw from school and focus on his preparation for the 2016 NFL Draft by rehabbing in the Phoenix area. "The way the injury happened, it kinda rolled into school -- school was starting and I couldn't really be very mobile, and I didn't have any transportation considerations," Jack told NFL.com about his decision to leave UCLA. "It kinda made it very hard for me to get to class, so that was an issue. "Taking my football career into consideration, I want to be with the best. I want to do everything I can to heal from this injury and come back better than ever. I had to decide whether to stay in school or pursue my dream, and I chose to pursue the dream I've had since I was a kid." He relocated to the Phoenix area to have his rehab overseen by Arizona Cardinals staff physical therapist Brett Fischer, with the goal being to run at the Scouting Combine in February. Jack's 75 tackles in 2013 ranked fifth on the team and were second among true freshmen in UCLA history to only future All-American (and NFL All-Pro) safety Kenny Easley. Jack led the Bruins with 11 passes broken up, scored seven touchdowns as a running back (and another on an interception return), blocked a punt against Oregon and for his exploits was named a finalist for the Paul Hornung Award as the nation's most versatile player. Jack's sophomore campaign was just more of the same, as he split time between outside linebacker (88 tackles were second on the team to only Kendricks) and running back (113 yards on 28 carries, including three touchdowns), earning Second Team All-Pac-12 honors. Bruins head coach Jim Mora used his connections in Seattle to lure Jack (a Bellevue, Wash. native) south to the Bruins and the payoff was immediate. Jack emerged as one of the most exciting and versatile players in the entire country as a true freshman, earning All-American recognition and becoming the only player in the history of the Pac-12 to win Offensive and Defensive Freshman of the Year honors.

an athletic specimen with above-average pursuit speed, contact balance and mental processor to know everything going on around him, jack has the athletic skill set to be a difference-maker.

weaknesses

Lacks ideal size at linebacker. Does not possess ideal length and can get caught up in the wash. Not an explosive hitter.

jack is well-suited to today's pass-happy nfl as he combines rare agility and speed with awareness in coverage. he has the fluidity to cover backs and tight ends step for step and anticipates routes well, breaking free from his assignment to close quickly on the ball. jack's ability in coverage make him ideally suited to playing outside in a 4-3 scheme, where his lack of ideal size is mitigated.

Jack's burst and agility make him an effective edge rusher and he doesn't shy from contact. He shows an explosive pop on contact to break free from would-be blockers. The hand-eye coordination that makes him so effective in breaking up passes shows up in his tackling, as well, as Jack is consistently able to trip up smaller, quicker ballcarriers. Breaks down well and wraps securely for the reliable take-down with little to no yardage allowed after contact.

strengths

Even on a team full of NFL prospects, Jack's pure athleticism stood out. Compactly-built with good overall musculature, light feet, a fluid turning motion and natural ball-skills, he could make the full-time switch to running back and earn early-round consideration. Given his impact ability on defense, however, teams may hesitate to do that.

will need to prove the health of his season-ending knee injury that required surgery and will be limited in his ability to impress scouts on the field during the pre-draft period.
