Darren Evans

RB · Virginia Tech
Though teammate Ryan Williams got most of the attention, Evans actually led Virginia Tech in rushing two of his three years playing at Virginia Tech (he redshirted in 2007). Evans looked like a future high-round selection as a redshirt freshman in 2008, gaining 1,265 yards and scoring 11 touchdowns despite starting only nine games, but hasn't yet regained the burst he once had since suffering a torn ACL in his left knee in the 2009 preseason. Evans hits the hole hard and has some power to his game, making him a potential late-round sleeper for a zone-blocking team needing a downhill runner.

positives

Good burst to the hole. Squares his shoulders and hits the hole with a full head of steam. Protects the ball with both hands when in traffic. Physical runner who shows the ability to lower his shoulder into defenders and gain yardage after initial contact. Cognizant pass blocker. Willing to take on the defender, showing good toughness, technique to sink his hips upon contact and anchor.

negatives

One-speed runner. Doesn't have the burst to beat the inside linebacker to the edge or the speed to pull away in the open field. Only adequate lateral agility and balance overall. Only average hands and body control as a receiver.

2008: Suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his left knee during the preseason.
