D.J. Johnson

CB, S · Michigan State
Comparisons will be made to 2008 first-round pick Domonique Rodgers-Cromartie -- both are tall, thin and play for FCS teams. Johnson isn't quite the prospect that DRC was, although his ability warrants top-100 consideration. He transferred from Missouri after starting four games (and missing five with a knee injury) as a redshirt sophomore in 2006 because his coach reportedly questioned his dedication. A 2008 first-team All-SWAC pick, he intercepted 10 passes and deflected 27 for JSU the past two seasons. Because teams do not challenge Johnson much on the outside, he played some free safety to take advantage of his playmaking ability. Did not play his senior year in high school because he transferred from Texas City to LaMarque.

positives

Perfect triangle numbers for a cornerback, with the height, long arms and track speed scouts love. ... Height and vertical make him a factor when the ball is in the air. ... Undercuts the receiver well, reading the quarterback and the route. ... Can flip his hips open quickly to run with receivers down the sideline. ... Has the quickness to stay with receivers in press coverage off the line of scrimmage. ... Good closing speed to the ball and receiver. ... Sniffs out and attacks quick screens. ... Makes yardage after controlling the interception. ... Shows some versatility when moved to safety, has the ability to quickly close on receivers and read the quarterback's eyes to break on the ball.

negatives

Some scouts aren't sure if he'll play cornerback or free safety. ... Inconsistent hands when trying to make an interception. ... Often tries to run before securing the catch. ... Uses his length to wrap up receivers but ducks his head and whiffs, threatening his chance to move to safety in the NFL. ... Some of his interceptions were made due to poor quarterback play at the lower level of competition. ... A bit high in his backpedal and matches up best against larger receivers on the outside. ... May struggle to change direction against smaller, quicker receivers.
