Mathis Jr. Named to Doak Walker Preseason Candidate

HOUSTON – University of Houston junior Tony Mathis Jr. has been named a preseason candidate for the Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the nation's top running back, announced Wednesday.
Ten semifinalists will be named in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will be announced in November. The committee will cast a second vote in December to determine the recipient. The recipient of the award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards.
Mathis Jr. joins Houston after spending the previous four seasons at West Virginia. There, the Orlando, Fla., native played in 31 games including 11 starts. In 2022, he ranked seventh in the Big 12 Conference in rushing yards per game (56.2) highlighted by a career day at Baylor which included 163 rushing yards and two scores.
Mathis Jr. was previously named to the East-West Shrine Bowl 1,000, recognizing approximately 1,000 all-star game eligible players for the 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl. A full list of Houston Football preseason honors can be found here.
The Doak Walker Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association. Founded in 1997, the NCFAA includes college football's most prestigious awards and its 24 awards have honored more than 900 recipients dating back to 1935. This season, 12 NCFAA awards will honor national players of the week each Tuesday.
