KU football lands first 2025 commitment

Just when it seemed like 2024 football recruiting had slowed down for the summer, 2025 recruiting kicked into gear.
The Kansas football team earned its first verbal commitment from an incoming junior Thursday evening. Quarterback David McComb from Oklahoma’s Edmond Memorial High, who first visited Lawrence on June 25, pledged to attend KU after spending more time with head coach Lance Leipold and offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki at an unofficial visit on Thursday.
“It feels really nice because I just want to build this relationship with these coaches now,” McComb told Jon Kirby of JayhawkSlant.com. “I don’t want to have to worry about camps, worry about visits, and having to throw in front of coaches. I’m all in for Kansas. Now I can focus on my team. I can focus on high school, and just winning the most games we can for those guys so they can be able to go to college too and be able to have this opportunity in the future.”
McComb told Kirby that he had come away with a very positive impression of quarterbacks coach Jim Zebrowski following a barbecue he had attended in June, and the two had stayed in contact since.
“I told Coach Z I wanted to commit a couple days after the barbecue,” McComb said. “Then he took me down, because I was on the visit high, and then he’s like, ‘Okay, let’s get your mom down here, make sure she loves it.'”
And so he did, getting her seal of approval, and telling the coaching staff he wanted to commit during the next visit.
During his sophomore year at Edmond Memorial, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound McComb threw for 1,488 yards and 11 touchdowns in eight games while running for 290 yards and three more scores. He had previously touched seven touchdowns in just five games as a freshman.
McComb’s most prominent offer besides KU was Virginia Tech, which he tweeted offered him a scholarship on March 23; the Jayhawks followed suit two months later.
KU already has Isaiah Marshall of Southfield, Michigan, lined up as a potential future quarterback in the 2024 class.
