ATLANTA – Coastal Carolina redshirt junior running back CJ Beasley has been named to The Wuerffel Trophy watch list for the 2023 season, it was announced today by The Wuerffel Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a mission to inspire greater service and unity in our communities.
College Football's Premier Award for Community Service, and one of the most meaningful awards in collegiate sports, The Wuerffel Trophy is named after Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Florida who parlayed his success on the football field into a lifetime of service. The Wuerffel Trophy embodies Danny's commitment to being a humanitarian while honoring student-athletes who are inspired to serve others and make positive impacts on society.
One of 110 players from college football's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) nationwide, the fourth-year Chanticleer has given back to the local community, volunteering with the Ekklesia Kids Summer Camp, Caring for Kindergartners in reading at elementary schools, the Boys and Girls Club of Myrtle Beach, the Grand Strand Miracle League, and also serving at Coastal Carolina with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).
This preseason, he was named to the 2024 East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 Preseason List and the 2023 College Football Network Preseason All-Sun Belt third team after picking up 2022 All-Sun Belt honorable mention honors last year.
In 2022, Beasley played in all 13 games on the season, making four starts in the offensive backfield. He led the team with 141 rushing attempts and 717 rushing yards on the season and was tied for second on the team with five rushing touchdowns. He averaged 5.1 yards per rush on the season and a team-high 55.15 rushing yards per game, caught 19 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown in the passing game, and was tied for third with six total touchdowns on the season.
Beasley's highlight of the 2022 season was when he scored the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter with the "Myrtle Hurdle" in the win over Georgia Southern (Oct. 1), rushing 12 times for 64 yards and the score.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 2, and finalists will be announced on Nov. 28. The formal announcement of the 2023 recipient is scheduled to be made on Dec. 7 during The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN, and the presentation of the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy will take place on Feb. 17, 2024, at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Ga.
Coastal will open the season versus UCLA at the famous Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, Calif., on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 10:30 p.m. ET.
CCU's home opener will be versus Jacksonville State on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. ET.
