Helton, Hood, Watson-Trent take center stage in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS - With the start of preseason camp less than a week away, Georgia Southern head football coach Clay Helton, along with fifth-year receiver Khaleb Hood and redshirt junior linebacker Marques Watson-Trent represented the Eagles at the 2023 Sun Belt Media Day, held in the New Orleans Sheraton and Caesars Superdome on Wednesday. The event, which used to be a one-day affair, was once again split over two days with the size of the league now. The East Division was up second this year with the West Division going first this year.
The group arrived on Tuesday afternoon and went to dinner in New Orleans before taking in the sights and sounds of the city. Hood tried oysters for the time and both players got to experience the legendary beignets at Cafe du Monde and a (quick) trip down Bourbon Street.
On Wednesday, the three went through the car wash of media interviews throughout the morning and into the afternoon and headed back to Statesboro on Eagle One so the players can finish up off-season workouts before the start of camp on Aug. 2.
For Helton, he did numerous radio interviews, an ESPN studio shot, a spot with the GS Radio Network, and also did several one-on-ones with local and regional outlets. A wide range of topics included N.I.L., collectives, the new-look Sun Belt, transfer portal and even about the upcoming season. The three took to the main podium late in the morning and spent the rest of the day hitting various outlets that cover the league.
Toward the end of the day, the group got to go over to the Dome to the Sun Belt's digital studio and a live hit on ESPN+.
As mentioned, camp begins on Aug. 2 as the Eagles prepare for their season opener on Sept. 2 at home against The Citadel. Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at GSEagles.com/Tickets.
The full practice schedule and open availability will be announced on Monday.
