Saquon Barkley’s last Giants game should be Sunday if they lose, WFAN host says

If the Giants lose to the Jets on Sunday, trading Saquon Barkley should shift from rumor to priority No. 1. That’s what Chris McMonigle said on his overnight show on WFAN.
“I don’t understand anyone who wouldn’t want to trade Saquon Barkley if they lose this game,” McMonigle said, via Audacy. “They’re not gonna tag him again…if they’re 2-6 and have punted on the season, I don’t see a Super Bowl run coming their way.”
Barkley has been a clear difference-maker for the Giants in the last two weeks. After missing three weeks with an ankle injury, the team’s offense looks improved since he returned in Week 6.
In that time, the two-time Pro Bowl running back has averaged 108 total yards with a touchdown. Meanwhile, the Giants have a +2 point differential and should be 2-0 - a blown pass interference call caused them a potential Week 5 win over the Buffalo Bills.
For McMonigle, it’s nothing personal. It’s just that there is no sense in keeping a player with high value on a team likely to miss the playoffs this winter.
“I don’t see any reason why Saquon Barkley needs to be on the team,” he added. “That’s not against Saquon. He’s a great player who you can get value back for him. I just don’t see any reason in keeping him.”
Rumors of trading Barkley began circulating after the Giants’ loss to the Bills. On Oct. 17, former Jets linebacker Bart Scott suggested the Giants should trade Barkley to the Ravens for a second-round pick. Days later, former Pro Bowl safety Ryan Clark made a trade proposal that would certainly impact the AFC. Appearing alongside Scott on ESPN’s “Get Up!” Clark suggested that the Buffalo Bills should target the 26-year-old running back.
On Sunday, Giants general manager Joe Schoen said he does not intend to trade him, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Intentions aren’t certainties, however, and a loss to the Jets could determine the 26-year-old’s future in New York.
