The University of Maryland announced on Wednesday that Dr. Rod Walters will conduct a review into the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair.
The University of Maryland hired Dr. Rod Walters to conduct a review into the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair, the school announced on Wednesday. Walters, a sports medicine consultant who oversaw athletic training at Appalachian State and South Carolina, will begin the review this week. The 19-year-old McNair was hospitalized on May 29 following a team workout that included 10 110-yards sprints, and he died on June 13. The review, announced by Maryland executive athletics director Damon Evans, will evaluate "relevant policies and protocols." The cause of McNair's death and even when he began experiencing difficulties have not been released. Maryland's regularly scheduled practices and workouts have been made voluntary until further notice, while counseling and access to spiritual leaders have been provided to players. McNair's funeral was held Wednesday in Baltimore. --Vanderbilt announced that defensive lineman Rutger Reitmaier, a transfer from Oregon, has received a waiver from the NCAA that makes him eligible to play immediately for the Commodores. Reitmaier, who is from Nashville where Vanderbilt in located, signed with Oregon and participated in the Ducks' 2017 spring practice, but left the school and sat out the 2017 season. He enrolled at Vanderbilt in January. "Adding Rutger to our roster is huge," Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason said. "He adds depth, athleticism and will be a key piece for us. I'm excited about what an impactful player he is, and it's great to add another quality player from Nashville." Reitmaier participated in Vanderbilt's spring practice recently. --Wake Forest has added two graduate transfer kickers, including Eric Osteen, who served five years on active duty in the U.S. Army after graduating from West Point. The 28-year-old Osteen was a platoon leader, company executive officer and company logistics officer who most recently led U.S. Army operations after three hurricanes in 2016 and 2017. As a senior for the Army Cadets, he had 29 touchbacks on 53 kickoffs as a senior in 2012. Darren Ford was a kicker and punter at Division III Hope College. Ford made 25 of 38 field goals and 99 extra points last season at Hope. Wake Forest must replace kicker Mike Weaver, who set the school's single-season scoring record in 2017 before graduating. --Cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., ranked as the 67th-best prospect in the Class of 2019 by one national rating system, committed to LSU. The 6-foot-1, 193-pound cornerback at Central High in Baton Rogue, La., where LSU is located, chose the Tigers over Florida and Texas. Coach Ed Orgeron already has received a commitment from tackle Kardell Thomas, the No. 2-ranked player in Louisiana, who plays at Southern University Lab in Baton Rogue. Stingley is the third top cornerback in the class to commit to the Tigers, joining ESPN 300 pick Maurice Hampton of Memphis University School in Memphis, Tenn., and four-star prospect Marcus Banks of Andy Dekaney High in Houston.
