Defensive back Bennett Williams (4) had a team-high three interceptions as a freshman for Illinois.
Illinois sophomore safety Bennett Williams announced on social media that he has been dismissed from the football team. Williams, who was suspended for the first three games this season due to an unspecified violation of team rules, took full responsibility for his actions in a posting on his Twitter account. "A part of growing up is realizing that sometimes relationships don't work out," Williams wrote. "I'd like to thank the University of Illinois, coaches and staff for originally believing in me and giving me a chance. I'm proud of what I've accomplished here. ... "My biggest regret is letting down people I love the most, and those who have supported me throughout my journey. To them I say that I will strive to make you proud. I look forward to a bright future and finding the best place for me to grow as a player and a person." A university spokesman confirmed Williams was no longer with the team, multiple media outlets reported. Williams had a stellar freshman season for the Illini. He appeared in 11 games, making seven starts, and had a team-leading three interceptions. He also recorded 64 tackles, two pass breakups and one forced fumble. Following his suspension, the 6-foot, 205-pound Williams hurt his hamstring in his return to the lineup against Penn State and did not play in last week's game again Rutgers.
