UNT lands commitment from highly regarded Kennedale senior Fredrick Dotie

The Kennedale safety got to know UNT director of recruiting Justin Owens years ago. Owens coached in high school ranks, ran camps and coached a 7-on-7 passing league team over the summers before joining UNT coach Eric Morris’ staff. Dotie was one of the stars of Texas Flex, Owens’ 7-on-7 team.

That relationship played a key role in UNT landing the senior, who announced his commitment to the Mean Green on Twitter on Friday. “The relationship I have with the coaches was the biggest reason I committed,” Dotie said. “I have known coach O since I was in middle school.

That made me more comfortable with North Texas. ” UNT linebackers coach Colby Kratch also played a key role in recruiting Dotie. He visited UNT multiple times and was on hand Wednesday when the Mean Green held their final recruiting camp of the summer.

Dotie didn’t participate in the event but did tour campus. “I enjoyed my visit,” Dotie said. “I got to see the dorms and the learning center.

I want to major in business and saw that part of the school. ” The 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior is ranked as a three-star prospect by 247Sports, which rates him at No. 76 in its composite rankings of the top safeties in the class of 2024.

Dotie has scholarship offers from a dozen schools. Missouri, Texas Tech, TCU and Utah, which are all members of Power Five conferences, offered Dotie a scholarship. UNT’s key American Athletic Conference rival UTSA also offered.

Dotie visited UTSA in late May. He cut the list of schools he was considering over the last few weeks and ultimately picked UNT over UTSA, Tulane and Stephen F. Austin.

UNT recruited Dotie as a linebacker as it shifts to a 3-3-5 scheme under coordinator Matt Caponi. He was a first-team All-District 7-5A Division I selection last season when he played for North Mesquite. He transferred to Kennedale in the offseason after his family moved.

Dotie became the 13th player in the Mean Green’s recruiting class and the second who is projected to play safety for UNT. The Mean Green picked up a commitment from Jaydon Smith from Ingleside earlier this summer. Dotie said he wanted to commit early so that he could turn his attention to his senior season.

He made his choice on Friday and secured an opportunity to team up with Owens again. “It was a great experience to play on Coach O’s 7-on-7 team,” Dotie said. “There were new faces every day.

I got to play with different guys and build relationships. ” .
