Michigan kicker, Saline native named to Lou Groza Award watch list
Jake Moody became the first kicker in Michigan history to win the Lou Groza Award in 2021. James Turner will look to become the second in 2023. The Saline native, who transferred from Louisville this offseason, was named to the preseason watch list Wednesday for the Lou Groza Award, given annually to the nation’s top place-kicker.
He is one of 30 players on the list. The senior will have big shoes to fill this season taking over for Moody, who made 52 of 60 attempts the previous two years. In four seasons at Louisville, Turner converted 47 of 59 field goals (80%).
He was 20 of 22 in 2022 with a long of 48. Turner, a two-time all-ACC honorable mention selection, transferred to Michigan in April. Last year’s Lou Groza Award went to NC State’s Christopher Dunn, who hit on 24 of 25 attempts, including 10 from 40 yards or more.
He was not on the preseason watch list. .
