UConn football running back Victor Rosa named to Hornung Award watch list
Victor Rosa, the UConn football team's leading rusher as a freshman a season ago, was named Thursday to the watch list for the 2023 Paul Hornung Award, which is given to the most versatile player in major college football. Fifty-three players were on the list. The Paul Hornung Award is given out by the Louisville Sports Commission in memory of Paul Hornung, a Louisville native and star at Notre Dame and with the Green Bay Packers.
Rosa, from Bristol, led UConn with 140 carries for 636 yards and 11 touchdowns as the Huskies finished 6-7 and played in their first bowl game since 2015. He had his first career 100-yard game with 111 yards on 12 carries at Army to close the regular season and added 75 yards and a pair of scores against Marshall in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. He finished with a team-leading 987 total yards and also had a team-best 15 kickoff returns for a total of 283 yards.
While meeting with the media following the first fall practice on Monday, second-year coach Jim Mora noted that Rosa is No. 3 on the depth chart behind junior Devontae Houston, who averaged 6. 9 yards per carry in 2022, and junior Brian Brewton, who missed eight games with an elbow injury suffered in late September but returned in time to play in the Myrtle Beach Bowl.
UConn opens the 2023 season against North Carolina State on August 31 at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. .
