Nevada Wolf Pack head coach Ken Wilson unfazed as team gears up to face No. 5 USC

Reno Gazette Journal The Nevada football knows what awaits in the season opener, going against a ranked team featuring the reigning Heisman Trophy winner. But the Wolf Pack is more concerned with itself before heading to play Southern Cal in the season opener on Sept. 2, with Heisman-winning quarterback Caleb Williams.

The Trojans are ranked in the top 10 in most preseason polls, including the No. 5 spot in the ESPN preseason poll. The Wolf Pack opened fall camp Wednesday and head coach Ken Wilson said the next month is about developing the depth chart and testing the players.

"We've go to work them into game condition. We've got to put them in adverse situations and we've got to test all the different scenarios that we can," Wilson said. "We've go to find the guys that can succeed in those adverse situations.

" Wilson said last season when the Pack finished 2-10 after winning its first two games, is all but forgotten by the players and coaches. "We've got a lot of new players who are excited to be out here and they know this is a process to build a program," Wilson said. Wilson, entering his second season as head coach at Nevada, said there is a noticeable difference over last year as players already know his style of coaching and the schedule and routines that are expected in camp.

He said there were 114 players at Wednesday's first practice and most are healthy, with only two players still rehabbing injuries. Nevada was picked to finish 11th in the 12-team Mountain West Conference in the preseason poll, but Wilson said they don't pay any attention to that and are not using it as motivation.
