2 more Syracuse players named to preseason award watch lists
Syracuse, N. Y. — Preseason watch lists for major college football awards continue to roll out, and Syracuse football players continue to appear on them.
Garrett Shrader was named to his second preseason award watch list, this one for the Wuerffel Trophy. He was put on watch for the Maxwell Award earlier this week. There are 110 players on the list for the trophy, which honors the college football player who best combines exemplary community service and on-field performance.
It is named for 1996 National Championship-winning Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel. Shrader is one of 16 nominees from the ACC. The second-year captain helped initiate Syracuse’s partnership with Team IMPACT, a nonprofit that matches seriously ill or disabled children with college sports teams for a life-changing experience, and he also volunteers at Clear Path for Veterans, which supports military families.
SU punter Max Von Marburg made the watch list for the Ray Guy Award, and is one of seven players from the conference on the list. The award honors the nation’s best collegiate punter and was created in 2000 by the Augusta Sports Commission. Von Marburg was also on last year’s watch list for the award as a true freshman.
He punted 52 times with a 39. 8-yard average per punt. His season-long was 55 yards.
